Insights Ch 28 Progressivism- movement by government to respond to the will of the people by creating laws that regulated business and protecting the rights of workers ID- Room in a Tenement Flat (657) Summary 1- Who was the photographer of the photo? How many people live in this room? Jacob Riis, 7 OI- Progressive roots 1)Why were Progressives (Greenbacks and Populists) upset? Corporations and Robber Barons, the few, had most of the power and wealth in US 2) What did Jacob Riis expose? New York slums in How the Other Half Lives (poverty, rats, disease) 3) What did Social Gospel Proponents base their message on? Christian teachings that the well off, middle class, should help the less fortunate, poor

Treason of the Senate - claimed that 2/3 s of the senate did not work for the people but instead the RRs and trusts 17th Amendment- Direct Election of Senators- before Senators were elected by state legislatures (Why is that a problem?) People now directly elected senators so that the senate was responsible to the people

Direct election of Senators 17th Amendment- people elect Senators, not corrupt legislators 9) What was the main goal of women Progressives? Earn the right to vote 19th Amendment (1919)- right to vote for women
President Theodore Roosevelt- progressive president, 1st Pres. to stand up and regulate trusts, sided w. people over business, not corrupt!!!
