Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Showcase Abstract & Presentation Guidelines
ABSTRACT GUIDELINES Only the primary presenter needs to submit an abstract, and only one abstract should be submitted for each presentation. Abstracts should be within 150-200 words. Abstracts longer than 200 words will not be accepted by the form. All formatting and special characters (e.g., scientific symbols) will not be processed by the form. Your abstract text should be in plain text format. Make sure the language is understandable by a non-specialist. (Avoid writing for an audience that includes only you and your professor.) Please fill out the online registration form carefully and communicate your special requests to the O.U.R. as soon as possible.
ABSTRACT TIPS Consider including the following sections where applicable to your abstract/summary: Brief background/introduction Research question you addressed Hypotheses tested Brief description of your methodology Brief description of findings, or results, or outcome, or work created, etc. Significance of results to your discipline and beyond 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Remember: You are the best judge as to what abstract/summary elements are needed to explain your work to a diverse cross- section of UTSA audience members. Please feel free to add or remove elements as needed.
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES All presentation formats are welcome: Poster Exhibition of art or model Recital Multimedia The recommended poster size is 48 wide x 36 tall. The font size and color on the provided templates (page 6) are appropriate for these size posters, however, you may change as needed to fit your poster design. Have your Faculty Mentor work with you and approve your poster before you submit. Posters that do not have Faculty Mentor approval will not be allowed to present. Submit your final poster to OUR@utsa.edu by April 6, 2018 for printing. We will be unable to assist with the printing of posters submitted after April 6, 2018.
PRESENTATION TIPS If you already have a poster for your work, you are encouraged to use it for this event! Just inform us of the dimensions of your poster so that you are assigned to a presentation stand that will accommodate your poster size. Add visuals such as flowcharts, timelines, graphs, charts, pictures, etc. to help the audience visualize what you have done! Show the audience what you did, why you did it, what scholarly outcome (findings, creation, work of art, etc.) resulted, and discuss the outcome within the scope of your field of study and beyond, if applicable. Consider including an abbreviated References Cited section with select works listed. Consider using the O.U.R. poster templates as a guide! Remember: You are the best judge as to what abstract/summary elements are needed to explain your work to a diverse cross-section of UTSA audience members. Please feel free to add or remove elements as needed.
