What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence is a pattern of learned behavior in which one person uses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse to control another person.
What does Domestic Violence Look Like? Physical Abuse: pushed, shoved, kicked, slapped, bitten, strangled, hit, punched, locked out of your home, denied help when sick, weapon used against you, objects thrown at you, abandoned in a dangerous situation Sexual Abuse: forced to watch or perform sex acts Emotional Abuse: threatened to harm you, family or pets; beliefs, race, religion, or sexual orientation ridiculed; manipulated with lies; being convinced you are to blame for the abuse; stalked Economic Abuse: Prevented from getting a job or going to school; denied access to bank accounts, credit cards or vehicles
*Name-calling *Manipulating *Jealousy *Humiliating *Degrading *Threatening The Cycle of Violence *Apologizes *Cries *Blames victim *Promises it won't happen again *Gifts *Kind & loving *Hitting *Slapping *Punching *Shoving *Strangling etc...
Sexual Assault (Criminal Sexual Conduct) In general, rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse are forms of violence in which there is sexual contact without consent (not agreed to) including vaginal or anal penetration, oral sex, and inappropriate touching.
What if you or someone you know is sexually assaulted? Remember: 1. Get to a safe place, call someone who can help or call 911 2. Try not to do anything that will change your appearance or get rid of evidence--don t shower, try not to use the bathroom, try not to change your clothes (if you do, put them in a paper bag) 3. Get medical care 4. It is not your fault--don t be afraid to ask for help and support 5. Find support from family, a friend, or a counselor
What is consent? Saying YES clearly and actively agreeing to be sexual with someone. The absence of NO is not consent The absence of STOP is not consent Saying nothing is not consent Sexual activity without consent is rape or sexual assault.
A person cannot consent if: a. They are under the age of 16 b. They have intellectual disabilities c. They have been drinking or doing drugs (or if the drugs were given to them without their knowledge--there are many tasteless, odorless drugs that can sedate a person = date rape)
According to Michigan Law: Having sex or sexual contact with a person under the age of 16, even if they agree" is a crime punishable with time in prison. Anyone convicted of having sex with a person under the age of 16 will be put on Michigan s Sex Offender Registry (length of time varies). **Also an automatic expulsion from school**
Consent is as easy as FRIES Freely given. Without pressure, manipulation, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Reversible. Anyone can change their mind about what they feel like doing, anytime. Even if you ve done it before, and even if you re both naked in bed. Informed. You can only consent to something if you have the full story. For example, if someone says they ll use a condom and then they don t, there isn t full consent. Enthusiastic. Without hesitation. Specific. Saying yes to one thing (like going to the bedroom to make out) doesn t mean you ve said yes to others (like having sex).
What is sexting? Sending sexually explicit messages or photos (nude or semi-nude). Child sexually abusive material (child pornography) is any picture, video, etc. of a child (under 18) engaging in a sexual act (any nudity and touching of the private parts of the body).
Persuade, engage, fund, produce = 20 year felony & $100,000 fine Legal Consequences of Sexting/Child Pornography Distribute, finance distribution, or promote distribution = 7 year felony and $50,000 fine Possession = 4 year felony and $10,000 fine
