  2. Is your measure of self-esteem really getting at self-esteem? Do the results of your study done on college students apply to older adults? What type of validity is involved? Are your data normally distributed? Do your results finding that boys are more aggressive apply when you look at verbal aggression? Does you asking if the targets in a study have a tattoo bring that to people s attention, leading to demand characteristics? (tattoo/not = IV) Does watching a video about shivering pets make people feel sad (your intended manipulation) or guilty?

  3. Response option summary If they aren t continuous (e.g., strongly disagree to strongly agree), then randomize the order or alphabetize them Make sure all options are available and clear and seem socially desirable Label options if possible Avoid other

  4. Scoring response options Most commonly used: Likert scales (on a scale) Semantic differentials (on a scale with bipolar adjectives)
