What are antonyms ? An antonym is a word that means the opposite of For example, the antonym of hot is cold. Some words can have more than one antonym, depending on the context in which the same word is used. another word.
Antonyms are opposites. Left, right In, out Antonyms are opposites . Fast, slow, Whisper, shout Antonyms are opposites. They don t mean the same. Young, old Hot, cold Yes, no Stop, go Wet, dry Tall, short
If I say young, Then you say old. If I say hot, Then you say cold, If I was yes, Then you say no If I can sit, Then you can stand. If I turn left, Then you turn right, If I can frown, Then you can smile.
Antonyms are broadly divided into two categories: Graded Antonyms: These express relationships along a continuum. For example: Good - bad, Intelligent stupid Complementary Antonyms: represent the only two opposite possibilities and there is no middle ground or scale that is involved between the two words. Such antonyms include: true false dead alive, day night
Relational Antonyms Pairs of relational antonyms are often considered as a third type. However, they are really a subcategory of complementary antonyms. In this type of antonyms, there is a relationship in which the two opposites must both exist. For example, if someone is selling, there must be someone buying. husband - wife, prey - predator
Conclusion Antonymy is the sense relation that exists between words which are opposite in meaning. There are three different types of antonym: gradable, complementary, and converse.
