BACKGROUND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION - SPRING 2013 There are still misperceptions about the definition of authentic assessment. assessment development challenging and authentic assessment unclear. It is clear that the College desires to improve and fine- tune authentic assessment methods across campus. Professional Development activities and more support from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness were identified as potential resources that may support improvement efforts. 2

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT AT OCC An evaluation in which students must apply knowledge and/or skills learned in a course to tasks that replicate experiences they would have outside of the classroom. Students creatively apply what they have learned rather than recalling facts. Therefore, authentic assessment measures the skills, knowledge, and dispositions that students acquire through course participation that can be used in their professional or personal lives. 5
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT AT OCC WITH SUGGESTED CHANGES An evaluation in which students must apply knowledge, skills and/or dispositions learned in a course to tasks activities that replicate experiences they would have outside of the classroom. Students creatively apply what they have learned rather than simply recalling facts content. OR Students use facts and knowledge in to creatively applying what they have learned rather than recalling facts. Therefore, authentic assessment measures the skills, knowledge, and dispositions that students acquire through course participation that can be used in transferred applied to their professional, or personal, or civic lives endeavors. 6
