Allusions Images Symbols: How to Study Bible Prophecy Lesson 4 The Nations: Part 1
Memory Text Daniel 7:14 NKJV Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed. Who receives this kingdom and from whom does He receive it? What does the Son of Man do with the kingdom He receives in Daniel 7? Do you look forward to living under a monarchy rather than a democracy? How long will the kingdom of God endure?
Overview After the flood, God initiated a new strategy to preserve the truth and lead people to salvation: He chose Abraham and made a covenant with Him to work through his descendants to bring light to the Gentile nations. Israel s rejection of the theocracy of God resulted in their diminished effectiveness in attracting other nations to the truth. Babylon s Defiance Abraham s Call Rejecting God Light to the Gentiles Summary
Babels Defiance What was the first city the Bible mentions after the flood? (Gen 10:10-12) What was God s command to Noah after the flood? (Gen 9:1) What were the people of ancient Babylon trying to achieve by building a tower? (Gen 11:4) What does the name Babel mean? How is the name Babylon used in Scripture?
Abrahams Call How did God call Abraham out of his home in Ur? (Gen 12:1-2) How did Abraham end up in the right place? What happened to Abraham during this journey? For what two acts of faith does the writer of Hebrews commend Abraham? (Heb 11:8-10;17-19) What can we learn from Abraham that will make us better stewards of God s resources?
Rejecting God For how long was the nation of Israel guided by a theocracy? How did Gideon reply when the people wanted to make him king? (Judges 8:22-23) With what proposition did the leaders of Israel approach the prophet Samuel? (1 Sam 8:4-6) How did God answer Samuel s prayer? (1 Sam 8:7-9) How did the monarchy work out for Israel?
Light to the Gentiles What did Moses envision for the people if they kept God s commandments as they entered the Promised Land? (Deut 4:5-6) To what great light did Isaiah point that would bring salvation to the ends of the earth? (Isa 49:6)
Summary The kingdoms of this world rise and fall and will continue to do so until our Lord returns and establishes His kingdom of glory to be inhabited by those He has redeemed and to never pass away. The first kingdom mentioned in scripture appears to be Nimrod s kingdom who was a mighty hunter and city builder. His first city was ancient Babel or Babylon on the plane of Shinar. It was there that God confused the languages of the people to halt their tower project designed to make a name for themselves and defy His instruction to fill the earth. The history of this city would make its name a symbol for spiritual confusion and the persecution of God s people.
Summary God s call of Abraham and His covenant with him, was intended to choose a holy nation to preserve the truth of God and promote the everlasting covenant of salvation by grace through faith. His chosen people were to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to be a light to the Gentiles. God s call and Abraham s response provides a template for our response when God calls us to leave a life of sin and allow Him to lead us to a land we have seen only by faith. Abraham s response to God s test of faith on Mt. Moriah challenges us to know the voice of God as Abraham came to know it: by a lifelong habit of daily communication with Him.
Summary Israel rejected the theocracy by which they were governed for 400 years desiring instead a human king. This turned out to be a mistake in which sinful kings ruled over sinful people. The faithfulness of their nation rose or fell with the faithfulness of the king, the vast majority of which did evil in the sight of the Lord. With the death and resurrection of Jesus, God s method of saving people changed from come and see to go and tell. God has given us Jesus as a Light to the Gentiles to bring salvation to all people. Will you pray this week for God s church to succeed where physical Israel failed, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth?
Genesis 10:10-12 ESV The beginning of his [Nimrod s] kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and 12Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. [R]
Genesis 9:1 NKJV So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. [R]
Genesis 11:4 ESV Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth." [R]
Genesis 12:1-2 NKJV Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. 2I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. [R]
Hebrews 11:8, 17-19 NKJV By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. ... 17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," 19concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. [R]
Judges 8:22-23 ESV Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian." 23Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you. [R]
1 Samuel 8:4-6 ESV Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah 5 and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations." 6But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD. [R]
1 Samuel 8:7-9 ESV And the LORD said to Samuel, "Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. 8According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them. [R]
Deuteronomy 4:5-6 NIV See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." [R]
Isaiah 49:6b NKJV I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth. [R]
