Allusions Images Symbols: How to Study Bible Prophecy Lesson 9 In the Psalms: Part 2
Memory Text Psalm 67:3-4 NKJV Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 4Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy! For You shall judge the people righteously, And govern the nations on earth. How extensive is this psalmist s plea for the praise of the living God? When can we expect this prophetic prayer to be answered that the nations will be glad and sing for joy and God will govern the nations on earth? How did the Israelites do in fulfilling God s plan to include the Gentiles in God s kingdom? Who has replaced the Israelites as the chosen people of God?
Overview Many of the Psalms focus on the goodness of God pointing to Him as our help, our hope, our King, our deliverer, our Savior and Lord. These pictures of God encourage us through the difficult times we know are ahead and assure us that His kingdom will prevail as the prophetic word becomes historic reality. Our Help and Our Hope Our King Our Savior Summary
Our Help and Our Hope How does the psalmist describe the uncertainty and turmoil possible in our fallen world? (Ps 46:1-3,6) How does the psalmist describe the peace and safety that comes from a relationship with the Lord? (Ps 46:7- 11) What assurance of final victory does Daniel give to the people of God in his vision of the pre-advent judgment? (Dan 7:14,18) What hymn in our hymnal (our book of psalms ) expresses the help God gives to us and the hope we have in Him? [Hymn 103]
Our King Who does the psalmist see as the King of kings? (Ps 47:1-2) Over whom does this King ultimately rule? (Ps 47:6-8) How does Psalm 2 point to Jesus as King? (Psalm 2:6-9) How did Jesus respond to Pilate s question about His kingship? (John 18:33,36) How does John portray Jesus as he returns in judgment on the wicked? (Rev 19:15-16)
Our Savior How do the opening and closing verses of Ps 67 express God s desire for mankind? (Ps 67:1-2,7) How does Isaiah make God s desire to save the Gentiles even more explicit? (Isa 49:6) What does the NT say about God s desire to save everyone? (2 Peter 3:9; 2 Tim 2:4)
Summary The psalms in our study this week paint a picture of a God who is engaged in human affairs, and who will see us through difficult times now and especially through end time tribulations. Ps 46 reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Ps 46 also reminds us to be still and know that I am God. Ps 91 reminds us that only with our eyes shall we behold and see the reward of the wicked. Many other psalms also point to a God who is our help in ages past, our hope in years to come. Whatever we face in the time of trouble that lies ahead we can trust in our omnipotent God to deliver us.
Summary Ps 47 presents the LORD as a great King over all the earth. Ps 2 is a messianic psalm in which Christ is designated by His father as King in Zion and is given authority over the nations to execute judgement as His second coming. Jesus was acknowledged by the wise men as King of the Jews, was welcomed in Jerusalem as king in the triumphal entry, and was crucified as king of the Jews by Pilate. At His second coming Jesus will return as King of kings and Lord of lords. He comes as a conquering king who will overwhelm all the forces of evil and all the governments of man to establish His kingdom of glory on the earth made new.
Summary Ps 67 reminds us that God intended all nations to know his plan of salvation. Christ was to be a light to the Gentiles to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. When the Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah, God rejected them as His chosen people. It is now those who are in Christ that are the chosen people of God. It is to the Christian church that God has given the commission to make sure the everlasting gospel is preached to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. Will you ask the Lord this week what you can do to help spread the everlasting gospel ?
Psalm 46:1-3, 6 ESV God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. ... 6The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. [R]

I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" 11The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. [R]
Daniel 7:14, 18 ESV And to him [the Son of Man] was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. ... 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever. [R]
O God Our Help in Ages Past O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come. Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. Under the shadow of Thy throne still may we dwell secure. Sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense is sure. Before the world in order stood or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God to endless years the same. A thousand ages in Thy sight, are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come. Be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home! [R]

[R]
John 18:33, 36 ESV So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" ... 36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. Revelation 19:15-16 ESV From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. Psalm 67:1-2, 7 NIV May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us--2so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. ... 7 May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him. [R]
