  3. Voting Voting is a way to speak your mind and your voice is heard. Voting causes change in communities. Voting is also a way of honouring history and the struggle to give every citizen the right to vote. 3 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  4. Types of elections In South Africa we have different elections for all levels of government. Voting is important because we elect the office bearers that will govern our country. 4 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  5. Types of elections During the National Elections we elect a new government and president. In the municipal and by-elections voters elect local government. 5 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  6. Who can vote and what documents do you need? In order to register as a voter you must be a South African citizen and be at least 18 years old. To vote you must have a green bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) 6 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  7. Casting your vote On election day you will go to the voting station at which you are registered. Beforehand check your voter registration status. During National and Provincial elections you can vote at any station countrywide. If you vote at a station outside the province in which you are registered, you can only vote in the National Elections. 7 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  8. Role of the IEC during elections. Managing elections of National, Provincial and Municipal legislative bodies. Ensuring that these elections are free and fair. Declaring the results of these elections. Compiling and maintaining a voter s roll. 8 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  9. In ensuring fair and free elections, the IEC performs the following duties: Compile and maintain a register of parties. Undertakes and promotes research into electoral matters. Develops and promotes the development of electoral expertise and technology in all spheres of government. Continuously reviews electoral laws and makes recommendations. 9 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  10. In ensuring fair and free elections, the IEC performs the following duties: Promotes voter education. Declare the results of the elections for the National, Provincial and Municipal legislative bodies within seven days. Appoints appropriate public administrations in any sphere of government and conduct elections when necessary. 10 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE
