The term democracy is derived from two Greek words- demos and kratos Demos means people and Kratos means power or government. In democracy, power of the government we mean a government is vested in the hands of the people.
FEATURES OF DEMOCRACY: Popular government Based on consent of the people Ultimate power of the government rests on the people Formed on the strength on majority People can directly or indirectly participate in the affairs of the government Public opinion plays important role Based on principle of equality Representatives are elected through universal adult franchise Existence of party system Emphasis on popular soverignty
TYPES OF DEMOCRACY: DIRECT INDIRECT DEVICES OF DIRECT DEMOCRACY: -Initiative -Referendum -Recall -Plebiscite
CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL DEMOCRACY: Eternal vigilance Social equality Provision for proper education Freedom of press Leadership Party system System of local self government Faith in democracy
Written constitution Character of the people Strong public opinion Spirit of unity Social and economic security Concentration of power Independent judiciary Peaceful atmosphere
