HOW CAN WE CALCULATE OUR EMOTIONS? EVERYTHING THAT COUNTS CAN AND OUGHT TO BE COUNTED. -CHIP CONLEY: AUTHOR OF EMOTIONAL EQUATIONS.
WHAT IS THE MAKEUP OF AN EMOTION? Physiological state The physical impact of the emotion. Cognitive state Our understanding of the emotion. Behavioural state How we react, the outcome of the emotion.
HOW DO OUR BRAINS RESPOND TO EMOTION? The amygdala is the main organ in responsible for perception. It s connected to many other primary brain structures. It s crucial for regulating emotion and emotion-related behaviours.
DOPAMINE Chemical neurotransmitter in the brain in charge of many key human qualities. Transmits signals to receive a reaction. Responsible for: Motivating and rewarding behaviour Energy and Movement Alertness and Attention Biological explanation for goal setting and desires (visual motivation) Pleasure Addiction: Dopamine causes addiction; drugs, alcohol, gambling, social media
WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN EMOTIONAL EQUATION? Dependant Variable Equation for despair Despair = Suffering - Meaning Constant Variable Independant Variable
FEAR AND ANXIETY. Dependant Variable Equation for anxiety Anxious feelings = uncertainty X powerlessness Independant Variable Uncertainty: What you don t know. Powerlessness: What you can t control
BREAKING DOWN OUR OWN EMOTIONS! 1. What you know about the situation. 3. What you can control about the situation. 2. What you do not know about the situation. 4. What you cannot control about the situation.
EXAMPLE: PRESENTING MY INQUIRY 1. What you know about the situation. 3. What you can control about the situation. I know the material I am talking about. I know my audience. That once it s over I ll feel great. Practice. I can control the slides. What is being said - subject. 2. What you do not know about the situation. 4. What you cannot control about the situation. Technical difficulties. If people will like what I have to say. If people participate. If my project is any good
6:3 EXAMPLE: PRESENTING MY INQUIRY 1. If my project is any good Easily learnt by asking.
CAN THESE EQUATIONS BE APPLIED TO EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING? It can really only be applied generally. How person A feels How person B feels We all feel different emotions in different situations, depending on our personal history.
GETTING TOO COMFORTABLE IN A CYCLE. If my emotions are based on my previous experiences and my experiences are based on my behaviour which is an outcome of my emotions then I am just repeating a cycle. Experience based emotion - outcome Emotion based outcome - experience
GETTING TOO COMFORTABLE IN A CYCLE. Life is constantly changing and obstacles are constantly being added in so it is important that we know how to adapt. Experience based emotion - outcome Emotion based outcome - experience OBSTACLE
WHY DO SMALL ACTIONS SOMETIMES CAUSE BIG EMOTIONS?- THE CHAOS/BUTTERFLY EFFECT. When we find chaos in order or order in chaos it is due to us being able to adapt to our constantly changing environment. Sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The chaos theory Chaos Non-linear Extreme Not proportional Indeterminate
FURTHER QUESTIONS. Is it possible to measure the intensity of an emotion? How many emotions is it possible to feel at once? Is it possible to chemically relieve addiction? Is it possible to calculate how someone is going to feel after a certain experience?
