  1. 23rd April 2018 Issues and Debates: Ethical Issues Learning Objectives: To understand what is meant by ethical issues. To apply ethical issues in psychological research.

  2. Glossarytest For the next 6 minutes revise the glossary words. 1. Correlation 2. Co-variables 3. Positive correlation 4. Negative correlation 5. Case study 6. Observation 7. Naturalistic Observation 8. Controlled Observation 9. Overt Observation 10. Covert Observation 11. Participant observation 12. Non-participant observation

  3. What do we already know about ethics? Stater: On your whiteboards, write down the different ethical issues you remember. Using your worksheet define each ethical issue, list the studies in each where ethical guidelines have been breached? Stretch and challenge: How was this ethical issue breached and what you would do differently?

  4. Introduction In this topic we learnt about the following five ethical issues; Informed consent Deception Confidentiality Right to withdraw Protection of participants Plus ONEMore . Guess? Morality is also an ethical issue! Stretch and challenge: Using your previous knowledge describe how morality is counted as being another ethical issue?

  5. Introduction Ethical issues are issues that cover working and living with other people What is considered right and wrong

  6. Ethical issues in psychological research There are ethical issues in all research in psychology. We are going to look at the ethical issues that have arisen in the topics we have looked at so far; social influence and memory.

  7. Memory Memory studies involve deception why is this a problem? As long as we debrief, we can deceive participants if we need to what does this mean? A study that involves deceit will not obtain informed consent prior to the start of the study. Consent can be given after the debrief- which can help.

  8. Memory Think back to the following studies: Peterson and Peterson s (1959) study Bartlett s study (1932) Memory experiments don t tend to cause too much harm Current research must go to an ethics board older research never did Answer: Peterson and Peterson study- If participants were told about the longer the interference and it affecting recall this would affect the way in which participants respond to the study. If Bartlett explained that he expected poorer recall of the story over time- this too would affect his results.

  9. Social Influence Studies of social influence have led to criticisms of psychological research. The very idea of putting someone under social influence is unethical Protection of participants: Research Milgram s study (Participants must be protected from brutality) Electric shocks Zimbardo? Guard Brutality

  10. Do the ends justify the means? There is an argument that the ends of research justify the means of research. Research is done to improve what is known about people and the interactions between people. So we have to break to ethical issues sometimes to find out more. This is a risk-benefit view where the coast of research are weighed against the benefits.

  11. Ethics committees Research tends to be carried out in universities and currently no study can be carried out until there has been a thorough research proposal which has to be approved by the ethics committee.

  12. Review On your worksheets topic starters on your spider diagram have been started for you. Use your notes to complete the diagram on different ethical issues found in studies in memory and social influence.
