NFHS Sanctioning www.nfhs.org
The IHSA sanction policy applies to interscholastic events in which the IHSA sponsors a state tournament series. Events that require Formal Sanctioning include: a) Any interstate event involving two (2) or more schools which is co-sponsored or titled in the name of an organization outside the high school community. b) Non-bordering events if five (5) or more states are involved. c) Non-bordering events if more than eight (8) schools are involved. d) Any event involving two (2) or more schools that involves a foreign country. The host school should complete international sanction application.
Ensure fair and efficient events Sanctioning enhances the likelihood that events will adhere to sound and detailed criteria which meets the specific requirements of a state association. Sanctioning serves to promote sound regulation of the conditions under which students and teams compete. Sanctioning is a means of encouraging well-managed rules and regulations
Sanctioning helps reduce the abuses of excessive competition. Sanctioning promotes uniformity in obtaining approval for events. Sanctioning helps protect students from exploitation. Interstate and International sanctioning at the NFHS level promotes financial transparency and equivalency of treatment of participating high schools.
An event sponsor is a person, company, club, or school (either a high school or college/university) who is looking to host an athletic event in a particular state. How does an event sponsor begin applying for hosting an event? They must first register online at www.nfhs.org, click on Sanctioning and fill out the online event manager application.
The host school is the school who assumes the accountability of being responsible for the event. The host school s principal assumes oversight responsibility for the event by being either present onsite during the event, either in person or by designee.
Can a host school be responsible for an event outside of that state (e.g. New York high school signing off as the host school for a Florida event) ? No, it is NFHS board policy, that the host school shall be in the same state of the event in the event something occurs at the event, then the principal or his/her designee could quickly assess and report the situation.
Events must be registered 60 days or more prior to the event date. The final list of schools participating is due 20 days prior to the event. The host state association reviews the event online and either accepts or rejects the sanction based on their eligibility rules. After the event has been approved by the host school is notified by email.
State Association Member Schools $100 if the application is received 60 days or more prior to the event date $200 if application is received 15-59 days prior to the event date ($100 application fee plus $100 penalty) $200 penalty if the application is received less than 15 days prior the event date plus an additional $100 penalty for not forwarding the list of actual entries 20 days prior to the event date for a total of $300 ($100 application fee plus $200 penalty)
Non School Organizations $200 if the application is received 60 days or more prior to the event date $300 if application is received 15-59 days prior to the event date ($200 application fee plus $100 penalty) $300 penalty if the application is received less than 15 days prior the event date plus an additional $100 penalty for not forwarding the list of actual entries 20 days prior to the event date for a total of $600 ($200 application fee plus $400 penalty fees)
Does the IHSA require sanctioning for activities? No Does the IHSA have a form for border states that require sanctioning? Yes, it is located on the IHSA website- Download Center-Forms. Which board states have additional sanctioning requirements? Iowa & Missouri
Please be aware that many Australian teams are making their way to the states to compete in Basketball. In the event that your schools are contacted by an Australian team (i.e. Australian Basketball Travelers), the event would require NFHS sanctioning.
