Club of Southwest Wichita Falls Datos Informativos: Fast Facts: Fentanilo: Lo Que Los Padres Necesitan Saber Fentanyl: What Parents Need to Know Los opioides afectan su cerebro: afectan reas del cerebro que controlan el dolor y las emociones, lo que dificulta sentir placer por cualquier cosa que no sea la droga. Opioids affect your brain they affect areas of the brain that control pain and emotion, making it hard to feel pleasure from anything besides the drug. Opioids affect your body - they slow down the actions of the body, such as breathing and heartbeat. What is fentanyl? Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. Although it can be prescribed by a doctor to treat patients with severe pain, it is also made and used illegally. Opioids can kill you - Even a single dose of an opioid can cause your breathing to slow or stop; taking opioids with alcohol or sedatives increases this risk. Opioids are highly addictive. - People who regularly use opioids often develop tolerance, which means that they need higher and/or more frequent doses of the drug to get the desired effects. Illegal Fentanyl is sold as a powder, dropped onto blotter paper, put in eye droppers and nasal sprays, or made into pills that look like other prescription opioids. Occasionally, the powder is used in vaping devices typically used for nicotine or marijuana. Opioid addiction is treatable Please contact your family physician or your school counselor for help. Some drug dealers are mixing fentanyl with other drugs. This is because it takes very little fentanyl to produce a high, making it cheaper to produce and distribute. This is risky because people taking drugs or vaping don t realize they might contain fentanyl, making overdose more likely. How to recognize a fentanyl overdose? Fentanyl Awareness the kill pill Fentanyl is the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered, said Administrator Anne Milgram. Fentanyl is everywhere. 6
Fentanyl Awareness National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day (August 21, 2022) National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day is established in remembrance of those lost to illicit fentanyl poisoning and to acknowledge the devastation this drug has brought to hundreds of thousands of affected family members and friends. 7
Fentanyl Awareness For the first time in our nation's history, over 100,000 Americans have died of drug overdose in a single year 2020- 2021. Fentanyl deaths are projected to double in the year ahead. A staggering 67 percent of those deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl. 8
Fentanyl Awareness Fentanyl is infiltrating our communities through counterfeit pills, cocaine and any other street drug you can name. There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illicit fentanyl. Anonymously sold through social media and delivered within minutes. Illicit Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin. 9

Fentanyl Awareness Fentanyl poisoning symptoms: Slow or shallow breathing Little to no show of a pulse (heartbeat) Unresponsiveness to external stimuli Inability to talk despite appearing awake A change in skin tone to bluish (for fair-skinned people) or grayish or ashen (for dark-skinned people) Limp limbs Vomiting A change in color of fingernails and lips to blue or purplish black Choking sounds or a snore-like gurgling (sometimes called the death rattle )
We must break down barriers to addiction treatment. Naloxone/Naracan is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. This medicine attaches to opioid receptors and reverses and blocks the effects of other opioids. Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. Naltrexone. Buprenorphine. Counseling is part of treatment: Opioid addiction impacts a person s behaviors. Counseling can help people deal with those behaviors and emotions often linked to addiction. It can also teach long-term coping skills for stress and help people start positive routines.
