When is Gastric Lavage Needed? Poisoning or Overdose Ingestion of toxic substances, overdose of medications, or accidental chemical intake. Must be performed as soon as possible (within 4 hours) for effectiveness. Before Surgical Procedures Patients undergoing gastric surgery (e.g., gastrectomy, partial stomach removal). Ensures an empty stomach for a smoother recovery .
When is Gastric Lavage Needed? (Continued) Severe Vomiting Cases Used in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to clear stomach contents for better examination. Collecting Stomach Fluids Samples taken for diagnostic purposes, such as suspected stomach disorders.
When is Gastric Lavage Needed? (Continued) Internal Bleeding Cases Removes accumulated blood in the stomach due to internal hemorrhage. Preventing Aspiration Pneumonia Used in surgical patients to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia (lung infection caused by stomach contents entering the lungs). Steps of Gastric Lavage A tube is inserted through the mouth or nose and passed through the esophagus into the stomach. Stomach contents are suctioned out and collected in a transparent bag.
Steps of Gastric Lavage (Continued) A saline solution is injected into the stomach through the tube to dilute toxins and cleanse the stomach lining. Activated charcoal may be used to neutralize poisons and absorb toxins.
Steps of Gastric Lavage (Final Steps) The tube may be left in place temporarily to monitor the patient s condition. The procedure should be performed within 60 minutes of ingestion for maximum effectiveness.
