  2. A reminder to consider others Please: Silence your cell phone & all electronic devices Use the nursery or cry room if your child is fussy Get up during the preaching only if absolutely necessary (please sit in back if you must leave early) Refrain from eating & drinking during worship service (except medical needs)

  3. Marriage Dissolution Marriages dissolve because of sin which brings tragic consequences to the couple, the family & society The three most significant passages: Matthew 5:31-32; Matthew 19:1-12 & 1 Corinthians 7

  4. Righteousness & Divorce Matthew 5:31-32 Jesus teaching on divorce in Matt. 5:31-32 is in contrast to the self- righteousness standards of the scribes The scribes claimed to obey Deuteronomy 24:1-4 Their teaching allowed sinful divorce & remarriage as long as the legal paper work was done.

  5. Righteousness & Divorce Matthew 5:31-32 Jesus rebuked their lame excuses - divorce for reason other than porneiva / porneia multiplies adultery

  6. Gods Intention for Marriage Matthew 19:1-6 The Pharisees are purposely testing Jesus in the effort to cause Him to lose popularity Rabbi Hillel taught divorce could occur for nearly any reason - his view was the most popular

  7. Gods Intention for Marriage Matthew 19:1-6 Rabbi Shammai taught that divorce was not allowed for any reason under any circumstance - not popular The third view allowed divorce, but only under special circumstances The self-righteous seek loopholes in the law in order to do what they want and still think they are righteous

  8. Gods Intention for Marriage Matthew 19:1-6 Jesus ignores their question and instead teaches them God s perspective on marriage - Matt. 19:4-6 God's moral will for marriage is one man and one woman joined together for life - God joins them together

  9. The Cause of Divorce Matthew 19:7-9 Verse 7: The Pharisee s interpreted Deuteronomy 24:1-4 as a command to divorce, not a restriction on it. Verse 8: Divorce was not commanded, only permitted due to the hardness of human hearts

  10. The Cause of Divorce Matthew 19:7-9 Hard hearts include not only the one that sins & will not repent, but also the one that will not forgive Verse 9: Not a cause for divorce, just the exception in which remarriage after divorce doesn t cause adultery

  11. Clear teaching in the Scriptures regarding marriage & divorce 1) God intended marriage to be permanent (Gen. 2:24 cf. Mt. 19:4-8) 2) God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) 3) God only commanded divorce in one unique situation - Ezra 10

  12. Clear teaching in the Scriptures regarding marriage & divorce 4) God allowed for divorce in particular situations a)Exodus 20:7f b)Deuteronomy 21:10f c)Deuteronomy 24:1

  13. Clear teaching in the Scriptures regarding marriage & divorce 5) God regulated divorce in certain situations and said it could not take place a)Deuteronomy 22:13-19 b)Deuteronomy 22:28-29 c)Deuteronomy 24:1-4

  14. Clear teaching in the Scriptures regarding marriage & divorce 6) Divorcees are treated differently in certain circumstances a) Leviticus 21:7,14 b) Leviticus 22:13 c) Numbers 30:9

  15. Clear teaching in the Scriptures regarding marriage & divorce 7) God uses the analogy of divorce to express his dealings with Israel at the time of the captivities

  16. The Various Views on Divorce & Remarriage A. Divorce is not allowed for any reason - or if divorce does occur, remarriage is not allowed B. Divorce is allowed only for adultery - but Jesus uses porneiva / porneia not moica;w / moichao

  17. The Various Views on Divorce & Remarriage C. Divorce is allowed only if there was unfaithful pre-marital sexual immorality D. Divorce is allowed only if the marriage is to too close a relative - consanguinity

  18. The Various Views on Divorce & Remarriage E) Divorce is allowed for sexual immorality and perversion such as those listed in Leviticus 18

  19. The Exception to Multiplied Adultery Matthew 5:32; 19:9 Divorce is an extension of God s mercy to the sinner who should die Mary & Joseph Matthew 1:19 Israel Isaiah 50, Jeremiah 3 The woman caught in adultery - John 8

  20. The Exception to Multiplied Adultery Matthew 5:32; 19:9 1 Corinthians 6:15-16 - In marriage, the two become one and sexual immorality perverts that bond Remarriage is assumed since the adultery does not occur for the innocent spouse until remarriage takes place

  21. The Exception to Multiplied Adultery Matthew 5:32; 19:9 Jesus does not command or approve divorce, but only states the exception which does not multiply adultery

  22. Separation 1 Corinthians 7:10-16 Verses 10-11: The Scriptures give room for separation. We protect the abused, not force them back into it. Those separated seek to reconcile or remain single Verses 12-16: Do all you reasonably can to remain together, but you can let an unbelieving spouse leave

  23. Separation 1 Corinthians 7:10-16 It is proper to force an spouse who continues to be unfaithful to choose between you and their paramour This passage does not give approval for divorce & remarriage it recognizes it due to hardness of heart - Matthew 5 & 19 still apply

  24. Pursuing Righteousness The Christian resists divorce with it occurring only because of the spouse s hardness of heart and sexual sin The innocent spouse should be like Hosea - willing to forgive and seeking reconciliation There are consequences to divorce, but even the guilty one can be washed, sanctified and justified by Christ

  25. My Counsel 1) I never counsel anyone to divorce 2) I may counsel for separation in particular circumstances with a view toward reconciliation 3) I encourage openness to reconciliation until it is impossible (death, remarriage)

  26. My Counsel 4) I pursue church discipline for professing believers that seek a divorce for cause other than porneia 5) I counsel for remarriage on a case by case basis depending on many factors

  27. Conclusions Divorce breaks God s design for the family and has a high cost financially, personally, spiritually & socially In Jesus Christ there is forgiveness of sin, healing for the hurt, and restoration to usefulness in His kingdom
