  1. GPS(Global Positioning System)

  2. Introduction: +The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based radio- navigation system consisting of a constellation of satellites broadcasting navigation signals and a network of ground stations and satellite control stations used for monitoring and control. Currently 31 GPS satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 11,000 miles providing users with accurate information on position, velocity, and time anywhere in the world and in all weather conditions.

  3. Constituents of GPS System: GPS consists of three segments 1. Space Segment 2. Control Segment/Ground Segment 3. User Segment

  4. Space Segment: The space segment of GPS consists of a network of more than 30 satellites that orbit the Earth at a height of 20,000 kilometers. These satellites contain ultra-accurate atomic clocks (accurate to one-billionth of a second!) that, in addition to being synchronized with each other, are also synced up with ground clocks. Each of these satellites continuously emits microwave signals that are captured by millions of receivers that operate all over the globe.

  5. Control Segment: Also referred to as the ground segment, the control segment is responsible for the proper functioning of satellites and the entire GPS system. It consists of a host of ground facilities, including one Master Control Station (MCS), an Alternate Master Control Station (a backup of the MCS), 11 command and control antennas, and 15 monitoring sites.

  6. User Segment: It consists earth- based GPS receivers. These receivers records and interpret the radio signals transmitted by satellites. The user segment actually consists of an antenna ,microprocessor ,power supply

  7. Advantages Of GPS: +It is very economical as there are no extra charges while using it. +GPS can work in all weather and is available for24 hours. +The positional accuracy of GPS is high. +GPS signals can be made available anywhere on the earth.
