Lean: Identifying Waste & Kaizen Toyota Production Systems Lab Grade 9-12
| 2 Identifying Waste Industrial engineers want to make things better by preventing problems before they start. In order to prevent problems, first we must identify problems or areas of waste. The Japanese word for waste is Muda which is a term that is used a lot when talking about Lean. Waste is always occurring, which means that IE s will never be able to completely get rid of waste, hence they must continuously improve every process.
| 3 7 Types of Waste Remember the Acronym TIMWOOD Transportation Inventory Waiting Overproduction Overprocessing Downtime
| 4 Waste Makes Mistakes! When we let waste occur it creates problems that we now must go and fix. By eliminating sources of waste we prevent problems! We eliminate waste through Kaizen bursts and process improvement activities like 5S. Then, we need to make sure it does not happen again, that s where Kaizen comes in.
| 5 Kaizen Japanese Term that means Change for the better or continuous improvement It is a philosophy that all Industrial Engineers use in their lives. It means gradual, positive change over time.
| 6 Ways to use Kaizen to Continuously Improve Kaizen Bursts 5S Gemba Walks VSM Mistake Proofing
| 7 Activity Identifying Waste, Kaizen Videos Kaizen: Kaizen The Secret behind Japanese Productivity Identifying Waste: Lean coffee video. Identify waste exercise. The Different Types of Wastes: Funny Introduction To The 8 Wastes Of Lean Manufacturing Identifying Waste in your Life See worksheet for details.
