Concept of Marriage Marriage is a type of primary social institution. It is a universal social institution established by the human society to control and regulate the sex life of human being. It is closely connected with the institution of family. Regulation of sexual life is the prime function of marriage, through which facilitate social control. Edward Westermarck, defined that marriage as the more or less durable connection between male and female lasting beyond the mere act of propagation till after the birth of offspring. Marriage is perceived by sociologists as a system of roles of a man and a woman whose union has been given social sanction as husband and wife.
Types of Marriage There are two types of marriage:- (1) Monogamy Refers to marriage of one man with one women & this is in general ideal form of marriage. (2) Polygamy -the term used to represent one man or woman marries more than one woman or man. Poly gamy refers to both polygyny & polyandry.

Rules of Marriage Endogamy- Endogamy means a man or woman marry a man or woman within his own group. Group simply means class, clan or caste etc. Exogamy- It is a rule of marriage in which an individual has to marry outside his own group. It prohibits marrying within the group. Gotra Exogamy,Pravara Exogamy &Pinda Exogamy Hypergamy- It is the marriage of a woman with a man of higher Varna or superior caste or family. Hypogamy-It is the marriage of high caste woman with a low caste man.
