Morphology in English and Arabic Second Lecture
Morphology It is either inflectional or derivational. Inflectional morphology includes grammatical processes such as :pluralizationof nouns, possession, tenses. Derivational morphology includes word- formation processes such as: affixation, compounding, abbreviation.
Inflectional Morphology in English 1. s-rd person singular. 2. ed-past tense. 3. ed-past participle. 4. ing present participle of the verb 5. s- plural. 6. s-genitive case. 7. er-est comparative-suprelative forms of the adjective.
Inflectional Morphology in Arabic Nouns, pronouns, and adjectives are inflected for number, gender, case .These three categories are called grammatical categories. Verbs in Arabic are inflected for person, number, gender, tense, mood, and voice.
There are three grammatical categories in English and Arabic : 1. Number 2. Gender 3. case
English number There are two types of number: 1. Singular 2. plural
Arabic number There are three types: 1. singular 2. dual 3. plural
English Gender There are three types: 1. animate 2. inanimate 3. common 1. Animate gender is divided into three sub- types: 1. masculine 2. feminine 2. Inanimate gender refers to neuter nouns 3. common gender can be masculine or feminine
Arabic Gender can be 1. masculine 2. feminin common
Case English case Arabic case There is just one case in English .It is the genitive case (possession) There are three cases and Arabic has different case markers depending on their number and definitiness: 1. nominative 2. accusative 3. genitive
