  2. Understanding Percentage Percent means out of 100 The symbol for percent is % ? x % means ??? ? ??? the quantity x % of a quantity is www.mathssupport.org

  3. Understanding Percentage 3% means 3 out of every 100 3% is called 3 per cent This is a chocolate bar made up of eight pieces. What percentage is one piece? 100 8 = 12.5% One piece of the chocolate bar will be 12.5% www.mathssupport.org

  4. Understanding Percentage 1OO% The above slice of orange is divided into ten Parts. Find what percentage is one part. To find one part; you divide 100% by the 10 parts. 100% 10 = 10% www.mathssupport.org

  5. Writing Percentages as fractions A percentage can be written as a fraction with the denominator 100. Example1 Write 38% as a fraction in its simplest form 38% means 38 out of 100 38 Simplify the fraction. Find the Highest Common Factor between 38 and 100 This can be written as 100 38 2 = Divide both by 2 (HCF). 100 2 19 = 19 50 So 38% = 50 www.mathssupport.org

  6. Writing Percentages as fractions Example 2 Write 72% as a fraction in its simplest form. 72% means 72 out of 100 72 Simplify the fraction. Find the Highest Common Factor between 72 and 100 100 72 4 100 4 Divide both by 4 (HCF). = 18 = 18 25 So 72% = 25 www.mathssupport.org

  7. Writing Percentages as fractions Example 3 Write ??? ?% as a fraction in its simplest form. ??? ?% Change mixed numbers to improper fraction 100 3 100 3 100 ??? ?% means ??? = % ?out of 100 100 3 100 = = 100 300 = 1 So ??? =1 ?% = 3 3 www.mathssupport.org

  8. Changing Percentages to decimals To change a percentage to decimal divide by 100. Example 1 (b). 19.7% (a). 7% Change to decimals: 7 = 7 100 = 0.07 (a). 7% = 100 19.7 19.7 100 = 0.197 = (b). 19.7% = 100 www.mathssupport.org

  9. Changing decimals to Percentages To change a decimal to a percentage multiply the decimal by 100%. Example 1 (a). 0.47 (b). 0.33 Change to percentage (a). = 47% 0.47 x 100% (b).0.33 100% = 33% www.mathssupport.org

  10. Changing fractions to Percentages To change a fraction to a percentage change the fraction to a decimal and multiply by 100%. Example 1 3 8 3 (a). (b). Change to percentage: 16 3 8 3 8 = 0.375 100% = 37.5% (a). = 3 = 3 16 = 0.1875 100% = 18.75% (b). 16 www.mathssupport.org

  11. Working out a percentage of an amount Example 1 Calculate 33% of 84kg write the percentage as a decimal 33 100 = 0.33 33% = multiply the decimal by the amount. 0.33 84kg = 27.72kg www.mathssupport.org

  12. Working out a percentage of an amount Example 2 Calculate 5? write the percentage as a decimal ? % of 40 5.25 100 5? = 0.0525 ?% = 5.25% = multiply the decimal by the amount. = 0.0525 40 = 2.10 www.mathssupport.org

  13. Making comparisons using percentages. To write one amount as a percentage of another write one as a fraction of the other Change the fraction to a decimal Multiply the decimal by 100% www.mathssupport.org

  14. Making comparisons using percentages. Example Write 660g as a percentage of 4 kg First, make sure to use the same units Change kg to grams 1 kg = 1000g 4 kg = 4000g Step 1. Write 660 as a fraction of 4000 660 4000 Change the fraction to decimal 660 4000 = 0.165 Change decimal to percentage 0.165 100% = 16.5% Step 2. Step 3. So 660g is 16.5% of 4kg www.mathssupport.org

  15. Making comparisons using percentages. Example Write 430 people as a percentage of 1600 people 430 1600 Step 1. Step 2. 430 1600 = 0.26875 Step 3. 0.26875 100% = 26. 875% = 26.9% ( to 1 d. p ) So, 430 is 26.9% of 1600 www.mathssupport.org
