Popular literature Popular literature includes those writings intended for the masses and those that find favour with large audiences. It can be distinguished from artistic literature in that it is designed primarily to entertain.
Popular literature, unlike high literature, generally does not seek a high degree of formal beauty or subtlety and is not intended to endure. The growth of popular literature has paralleled the spread of literacy through education and has been facilitated by technological developments in printing.
With the Industrial Revolution, works of literature, which were previously produced for consumption by small, well-educated elites, became accessible to large sections and even majorities of the members of a population.
Popular literature is that which is written for the masses. It does not challenge the mindset of the common reader and is easily understood and relatable. Popular literature exists simply to entertain and not to teach or lead the reader into much philosophical enquiry or disturb what they already know about the world.
The commercial aspect of popular literature plays a huge role in putting certain texts into that category, as they are written merely for the aim of being sold to larger audiences. popular literature are not bound by any rules and the fate of a text cannot be predicted by anybody. At the same time, both high literature and popular literature play equally important roles in society.
In India, one might associate popular literature with Chetan Bhagat, Preeti Shenoy, Amish Tripathi etc . Although many serious readers would hesitate to classify their works as literature. But then, that is a subjective view, and it can't be denied that these writers enjoy large popular appeal.

Often people tend to associate popular literature with inferior literary value, however, that might not always be the case. Works of writers like Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were quite popular at the times they were written, and they surely don't lack in literary value. Especially after the advent of postmodernism, the line that separates serious and popular literatures have become increasingly blurred.
The most important genre in popular literature is and always has been the romance extending as it does from the Middle Ages to the present. The most common type of romance describes the obstacles encountered by two people (usually young) engaged in a forbidden love.
Another common genre is that of fantasy, or science fiction . Finally, the detective story or murder mystery is a widely read form of popular literature. Popular literature has also come to include such genres as comic books and cartoon strips.
