  1. Reported Speech Part 2 Reported Questions

  2. Study the examples Do you trust me, Harry? asked Hermione. Hermione asked Harry if he trusted her. Why are you still here? Harry asked Ron. Harry asked Ron why he was still there.

  3. Changes As you can see there are some changes we have already mentioned when studying reporting statements (personal pronouns, possessive adjectives and pronouns, tenses, time adverbials). There are some new ones, though.

  4. Reporting verbs Reporting verbs used are mainly: ask, want to know, wonder

  5. Types of questions We distinguish two types of questions: Yes/no questions (the ones starting with an auxiliary or modal verb to which we reply with yes/no) Wh-questions (the ones starting with a question word, such as what, when, where, why, how etc.)

  6. Harry asked Lupin: Will George be OK? Harry asked Lupin whether George would be OK. Harry asked Ron: Do ghouls normally wear pyjamas? Harry asked Ron if ghouls normally wore pyjamas. Yes/no questions When we report these questions we link two parts with if/whether

  7. Where are we? asked Ron. Ron asked them where they were. How does she know? wondered Hermione. Hermione wondered how she knew. Wh-questions The two parts are linked with the question word used in direct speech.

  8. Word order In reported yes/no questions, we use if/whether + the subject + the verb. In reported wh questions, we us the wh- word + the subject + the verb. We do not use the interrogative form of the verb: do/does/did Question marks are not used.

  9. Does it make a difference? asked Hermione. Hermione wanted to know if it made a difference. What do you know about the Deathly Hallows? Harry asked Mr Olivander. Harry asked Mr Olivander what he knew about the Deathly Hallows.

  10. Lets practise Why isn t he coming with us? asked Dudley. Dudley wanted to know why he wasn t coming with them.

  11. Can you control what you dream about, Hermione? asked Harry. Harry asked Hermione whether she could control what she dreamed about.

  12. Are you sure? Bellatrix asked Griphook. Bellatrix asked Griphook whether he was sure.

  13. Why isnt Hermione with you? Harry asked Ron. Harry asked Ron why Hermione wasn t with him.

  14. How are we going to find Bathildas house? asked Hermione. Hermione asked Harry how they were going to find Bathilda s house.
