objectives 1. Define research methodology 2. Differences between research, science and knowledge 1
1 1. Define research methodology 2
Define research methodology : A research methodology is a plan for how a specific piece of research will be conducted. It describes the techniques or procedures utilized to identify and analyze data on a specific research topic. The research methodology, is concerned with how a researcher designs their study in such a way that they can obtain valid and reliable results while also meeting their research objectives.(1) 3
Types of research: Qualitative Methodology Quantitative Methodology Mixed-Methods Methodology Quantitative research is based on the collection and analysis of numerical data. In contrast to qualitative research, which is more exploratory in nature, quantitative research is typically used when the research objectives are confirmatory. the mixed-method methodology combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies in order to integrate their strengths and produce rich results This research method is commonly used in exploratory research to investigate a research problem that is not clearly defined. It is helpful in comprehending abstract concepts, perceptions, body language, opinions, and even visual data. 4
2 Differences between research, science and knowledge 5
Research : Research is defined as a collection of methods used to generate new knowledge or to apply existing knowledge in newer creative ways in order to generate cutting-edge concepts, methods, and theories while also understanding existing theories in a new light. Research can also be defined as a method of carefully considering studies about a specific concern or problem using scientific methods. The systematic investigation for describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling an observable phenomenon is referred to as research.(2) 6
Science : Science can be defined as both a body of knowledge (what we already know) and the process of acquiring new knowledge (via observation and experimentation testing and hypothesizing). The knowledge acquired is dependent on the questions asked and the methods used to find the answers, knowledge and process are inextricably linked. The field of science can be further categorized into the following groups: natural science, social science, formal science and applied science.(3) 7
Knowledge : fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association is defined as knowledge. In practice, however, there are numerous equally plausible definitions of knowledge. One popular definition of knowledge is "an entity's ideas or understandings that are used to take effective action to achieve the entity's goal (s). This knowledge is unique to the entity that generated it."(4) 8
Summary 1. A research methodology is a plan for how a specific piece of research will be conducted. It describes the techniques or procedures utilized to identify and analyze data on a specific research topic . 2. The types of research include ( Qualitative , Quantitative Methodology , Mixed Methods Methodology ) 3. There is a difference between research , science and knowledge . 9
