Lesson 1: Root Words and Affixes Root words or roots are the origins of many English words. These are basic words with no affixes (prefixes or suffixes). Affixes are a group of letters attached to words and change the meaning of the word. Prefixes are a group of letters that appear at the beginning of a word. Suffixes are a group of letters that appear at the end of a word.
