Lesson 1: Shades of Meaning There are words that are synonymous with each. But if you take a closer look at these words, they actually have a slightly different meaning.
Lesson 1: Shades of Meaning The words typically have their synonyms. Because these synonyms offer the same sense, they are still different from the word itself. Hence, what we call shades of meaning. Shades of meaning distinguish the small, subtle differences between words. It is important to distinguish this small difference, so you will be able to better express an idea. There is no rule that really teaches how the words are arranged based on their strength, but consulting a dictionary or a reference definitely helps. Example: Other Examples: happy ecstatic joyful good pleasant awesome The word happy means feeling pleasure and enjoyment. The word ecstatic means feeling very happy. The word joy or joyful means a feeling of great happiness. large huge gigantic The slight intensifiers definitely make a big difference to the meaning. Thus, knowing this can allow you as a writer to identify which is the best word to use.
