  2. What is Social Science? Social Science is a generic term covering the scientific study of man singly or in groups as regard his essentially non-physical characteristics. The term Social Science means- The study of the society in the context of human beings . Social Science is a branch of science that deals with institutions and functioning of human socities.

  3. Characteristics Of Social Science Social science basically complex in nature. It is basically theoretical. It is concerned with research & experimentation. It deals with particular phase or aspects of human society. It basically advanced studies of human society to be taught to matured students.

  4. What is a Text book? The text book constitutes an inseparable part of any system of education. In a developing country like ours where minimum essential requirements of classroom are hardly provided the necessity of quality of textbooks evident. As far as social science is concerned the text book is an aid which is considered is dispensable in all methods adopted for its institution the study of the subjects the role played by textbook is second only to that of the teacher. It acts the learner chief aid and support.

  5. Purpose of Using Textbook To help teachers To help pupils To give minimum essential knowledge at one place It helps to self teaching To provide logical and comprehensive materials To provide both confirmation and sustenance To ensure intellectual rapprochement of learners

Criteria For A Good Social Science Textbook Student centric Fluent narration Clear and self explanatory arrangement Well illustrated Simple, interesting and attractive Free from biasness Must be updated Adequate exercise and suggestions for activities Promote group effort Developing international understanding

  7. Cautions in the Use Of Textbooks Reading a unit of text book in a class is not desirable. Textbook is basically supplementary to a teacher not a primary material. Do not use textbook as means of avoiding hardwork.

  8. Advantages of Textbooks Textbook can be useful for planning of courses, units and lessons. They provide an organisation or structure for the course. It provide a certain number of activities and suggestions. It provide selection of content that can be used as a basis for selecting course content.

  9. Disadvantages of Textbooks They are usually dull It s superficial in nature Poor presentation High price Lack of initiative Lack of research It can not provide pupil ability or interest
