Special or Extenuating Situations Financial Aid administrators are allowed to exercise Professional Judgement when considering special or extenuating situations (such as a loss of a job) that impact a student's or family's financial condition.
First, Complete the FAFSA If a contributor to the FAFSA (student, parent, other parent or spouse) is experiencing special circumstances, they will first complete the FAFSA by providing the information requested.
Contact Each Financial Aid Office Once the FAFSA has been submitted, the student may request the financial aid office at a college listed on their FAFSA consider adjusting a data element that will impact the student's Cost of Attendance or Student Aid Index. This, in turn may affect the student's eligibility for different types and amounts of financial aid.
The Process Differs at Each College/University If you want to have any special circumstances considered, you will need to contact each college or university individually to ask about their internal process. Each institution will need their own copy of your documentation.
Decisions Are Final It's important to note that the use of professional judgement, the decisions made, and the adjustments taken will vary from institution to institution. The decisions of each financial aid office are final and not appealable. This may result in different financial aid eligibility at different schools.
