  1. Static Cling By: Elika, Mikyla and Evan

  2. What is Static Cling and how is it caused? Definition; Static cling is when two materials attach to one another or to a surface because of static electricity. Static cling is caused when static electricity builds up in an object or surface. This occurs because of friction between the two which causes an increase of electrons in the objects or surfaces. The electrons than attract opposite charges. Example: When fabric rubs with fabric in the dryer and rubbing a balloon on your hair and your hair gig up because it is repelling the balloons charge.

  3. How can it be prevented? Air drying clothes Increase humidity Patting a damp cloth on the static area Separate different types of fabrics Use fabric softeners and dryer sheets (dryer sheets balance out the electrons in the fabric) Using anti-static spray\ Divert the excess electrons What does humidity/ water have to do with static cling you may ask? The more humid and environment is the water molecules it has. Water traps the excess of electrons in an object, eliminating the chance for static cling to occur. How does air drying help? Air drying helps reduce static cling unlike a dryer which increases chances of static cling happening. In the dryer objects are being rubbed together at a high speed with a metal which is a conductor. A dryer easily allows electrons to transfer from object to object.

  4. How do dryer sheets work to decrease static cling? When clothes spin around in a dryer, they rub against each other and exchange electrons. When this happens, everything becomes either negatively or positively charged and they stick to each other. To prevent this, people put dryer sheets in with the clothes. These sheets are positively charged, and when they bond with the negatively charged clothes they become neutrally charged again. The neutral and positively charged clothes don't bond to each other and stay away, therefore preventing static cling.
