Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires - these are God s feasts, to which He graciously invited His people! - these feasts were set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and seasonally: two lambs a year old day by day regularly [Ex 29:38-46; Nm 28:1-8] the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest [Lv 23:2] ...at the beginnings of your months ...blow the trumpets [Nm 10:10] ...three times in the year you shall keep a feast to Me [Ex 23:14-17] ...in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath ...for the land [Lv 25:2-7] ...you shall consecrate the fiftieth year [Lv 25:8-17] cp Paul s words in Col 2:16 with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] - these appointments by invitation have a HOLY purpose - in order to participate FULLY, the worshiper must be holy, set apart cp regulations for the Passover Feast [Ex 12:43-49; ONE law ] - all the males must be circumcised; this sets them apart from foreigners cp the regulations for eating from the offerings [Lv 7:15-21; cp 6:24-29] - only the priests (set apart) could eat from some of the sin offerings; only people who were not unclean could eat from the peace offerings Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] - these appointments by invitation have a HOLY purpose - in order to participate FULLY, the worshiper must be holy, set apart - the Holy God sanctified His people FOR fellowship with Him cp Ex 19:5-6; ...IF you will indeed obey my voice ...(THEN) you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holynation [emphasis mine] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] - these appointments by invitation have a HOLY purpose - in order to participate FULLY, the worshiper must be holy, set apart - the Holy God sanctified His people FOR fellowship with Him - the Holy God sanctified His people BY fellowship with Him it was in the PRACTICEof God s will that Israel was continually further set apart from the Gentiles [cp Lev 11:44-45; 19:2; see also Rom 12:1-2] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION - the Holy God regularlycalled His people to Himself for a feast incredibly, did some see this as a burden? [cp Lk 14:16-24; Mal 1:13-14] God Himself provided for the feasts all year long by filling their hands with all they would need to participate! [cp Dt 16:15-17; see Dt 14:22-26] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION - the Holy God regularlycalled His people to Himself for a feast - participation in the feasts was not meant to be optional ; this was a blessing of fellowship with God! cp Ex 23:14-17 ( all your males must appear for three annual feasts) God excused them from work so they d come! [23:3, 7-8] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION The majority of these appointments was for feasts [23:2] - Feast: a joyous celebration involving much food ( festival ) often, God s blessings are described in terms of food: - consider God s earliest blessingson man [Gen 1:29; 2:15-16] - consider God s description of the promised land [Ex 3:8; Nm 13:23-24] - cp also God s repeated blessing on Israel if they are faithful [Dt 7:13; 11:14; 14:23; Joel 2:19; etc, etc, etc] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION The majority of these appointments was for feasts [23:2] - Feast: a joyous celebration involving much food ( festival ) often, God s blessings are described in terms of food Jesus often used feasts as a description of fellowship with God - wedding feasts [cp Mt 22:1-13; 25:1-13; John 2:1-11 (1st miracle at a wedding!)] - in the gospel of John, Jesus was constantly teaching at feasts [John 2:13, 23; 4:45; 5:1(16); 6:4-6; 7:2, 10-14, 37; 10:22; 12:1, 12-15, 20; 13:1; etc, etc, etc] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION The majority of these appointments was for feasts [23:2] - Feast: a joyous celebration involving much food ( festival ) - only oneof these meetings was specifically a FAST: cp Day of Atonement, afflict your souls [Lv 23:27, 29(32)] - afflict your souls means to fast[see Isaiah 58:3-8] - cp Lv 16:29-30; they must afflict their souls because of the nature of the day: a reminder of the atonement for sin! [cp Hb 10:1-4] Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Consider the setting of these prepared places: - Genesis 2:8-10, 15-16; 3:8 paradise(but in sin, they hid from Him!) - Gen 47:5-6 Israel in Egypt (400+ years!); by His blessing, in Goshen - Ex 3:8 a land of milk & honey given to Israel forfellowship with Him; daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, seasonal invitations to His feasts - John 2:1-11 Jesus began His earthly ministry at a wedding feast - Luke 22:14-20 Jesus earthly ministry ended at the Passover feast - Jesus left a memorial love feast for Christians in the Lord s Supper cp Jude 12; 1 Cor 5:7-8; Heb 10:19-25 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. - Psalm 23:5 Come, Feast with the LORD

Leviticus 23 Leviticus 23:1-8 - These are the appointed feasts of the LORD God established appointments with His people [2, 4] As LORD, it is His right to set appointments when He desires God decreed these as holy convocations [23:2] These appointments are a compulsoryINVITATION The majority of these appointments was for feasts [23:2] God stilldesiresa holy people to feast with Him [John 4:21-24] Now consider this: Jesus went to prepare a place [John 14:1-3]; left His word to sanctify and prepare a holy people who would be able to come and feast with Him [John 17:17-21, 24] He calls us to HIS wedding feast as the honored bride! [Rev 21:1-7; 22:17] Is it hard to imagine that some (of us!?) might see this as a burden? Come, Feast with the LORD

  16. LEVITICUS You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy - Leviticus 19:2 Leviticus shows us God desires fellowship with us!
