  2. MADAKARI

  3. The drug which affect the Buddhi ( wisdom, intellect and memory) and produces Mada ( intoxication )due to predominance of Tamo guna is known as Madakari. Madya and sura Madakari dravyas will be Agneya and Vayavya in PM composition.

  4. Mode of Action Agneya and Vayavya in PM composition Gunas- Tikshna, Laghu, ushna, sukshma, amla, vyavayi, ashu, Ruksha, vikasi and Vishada. OJAS gunas- Guru, sheeta, mrudu, slakshna, Sandra, Madhura, sthira, Prasanna, pichilla and snigdha. Hence madakari dravyas being opposite to ojas gunas will decrease ojas inturn decrease/ impair mana, buddhi.

  5. In yogaratnakara we find Dhattura, Ahiphena and Bhanga as madakari drugs along with other properties. Therefore it may be defined that the drugs which affect the sensorium are madakari drugs.

  6. Alcohol depresses the CNS in a descending order. In small doses it causes euphoria, freedom from anxiety and worry and may improve social communication. This action may be beneficial therapeutically by relieving pathological nervous tension and by improving appetite in anorexia. The initial effect of alcohol is due to a depression of the reticular activating system.

  7. Adhamalla clarified that the first stage of Madyapana is only promoting sensorium the other three states are destroying the sensorium. Madya will badly affect the ojus with its properties like ushna, tikshna, ruksha, vyavyayi, asukari etc. It may even reach the hridaya along with Jataragni and spreads in the upward direction through the Dhamanis. There fore it effects the indriyas and manas.

  8. PRAMATHI

  9. The drug which will expel the malas (Doshas and Malas) from various channels or systems because of its potency and special effect is known as pramathi. Eg; Maricha, Vacha etc These pramathi dravyas will be Katu, ushna and teekshna.

  11. These drugs will act upon the sanchaya of doshas i.e. during early state of pathogenesis. Adhamalla considers mainly Bahirmukha srotas viz; Karna, mukha, nasa etc; while Kasiram accepts all Abyantara srotas viz; Rasa vaha etc.

  12. Research activity Thrombolytic activity of Piper nigrum ( Maricha) and Acorus calamus (Vacha) an Invitro study. Need:- Thrombo embolisim is commonest cause of Cardiovascular disease. Activity:- Clot lysis activity of ethanolic extracts Venous blood of 15 healthy individuals was taken for the study. Result :- A. calamus showed significant clot lysis activity than P. nigrum
