Experiment No. (12) The internet Object: Understanding the Internet , the usage og thr it, browsers, and E-mail. Theory: The Internet is an international wide area computer network. These networks are basically made up of smaller networks connected together to enable people to communicate with each other using set of standards. Internet links millions of computers all over the world. It allows your computer to get information stored on other computers far away. 66

These computers falls into two groups: - Servers : Provides services ( E-mail, Telnet, File transfer, Web(http). - Clients : who use the those services. The servers connect to Network Access Points(NAP) that make up the backbone of the internet . Internet Terms Browser: is S/W program that enables you to view Web pages on your computer. Browsers connect computers to the Internet, and allow people to surf the Web. ( Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer Search Engine: is a web site that will help you search the Internet for key words, subjects, etc.(Google Chrome). A web server hosts or stores a company or a person web site. 67

A web site is a collection of pages containing information about company, person, product, service For a Web server to communicate with other computers, it must use hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). Web browser that formats the pages using instructions written in language called Hypertext markup Language (HTML). Layout of a Web Page Title bar tells you the name of the web page Menu bar has commands for moving around the webpage, printing, etc. Tool bar short cuts to commands. Each picture represents a command Address bar webpage address. If you want to go directly to a web page, you will need to know the address. 68
