Conversations that we move in to easily How are you today? What is new with you? Tell me about what is going on with you How can we be most helpful today? Others? For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 1 John 3:11
Conversations we address with caution or even often avoid altogether History of physical illnesses/current details of illnesses Multiple relationships Sad conversations Topics causing heightened emotions: anger, fear, frustration, worry, loss of faith, etc. Intimacy Politics Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13: 1-2
Reasons for avoidance, discomfort Need to be polite Lack of response available Lack of knowledge of issue at hand Fear of causing discomfort or pain Fear of the speaker / reactions Our own intersection with the issue at hand Years passed, or now Others? Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. Romans 14:13
What we need from each other- what our friends need from us Real conversation- trust your gut! Caring honesty Genuine interest Sincere presentation Eye contact Humor Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16
How we follow Jesus lead Matthew 25 For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me. I was poor and you noticed. I was mentally ill and you cared enough to listen.
