Husbands and Wives (22-33) The home is the basic unit of society. As goes the family, so goes society, AND the church! As we consider this section, keep in mind how the husband/wife relationship relates to Christ and His church
Husbands and Wives (22-33) Wives submit to your husbands (22) As to the Lord Submit to subordinate. Wives are commanded to do this. It should be voluntary, and not forced Repeated in scripture Colossians 3:18, 1 Timothy 2:11-12, 1 Peter 3:1-6 Not about surrendering equality- Galatians 3:27-28, 1 Cor. 11:11- 12, 7:3-4
Husbands and Wives (22-33) The husband is the head of the wife (23) He is to lead again this is willingly
Husbands and Wives (22-33) The wife is subject to their own husband in everything (24) As the church is subject to Christ In everything Except Acts 4:19-20 God s intent is that both the husband and wife fulfill their roles in a godly way. Such a tragedy when either party fails in their role!
Husbands and Wives (22-33) Husbands, love your wives (25) Colossians 3:19 While a good man loves his wife, he may be more hesitant to say it. Hence the command! Say it and show it! 1 Peter 3:7
Husbands and Wives (22-33) Husbands, love your wives (25, 28-29) How? As Christ loved the church As your own body (28-29) take care of yourselves Nourishes and cherishes More than physical provisions (1 Timothy 5:8, 2 Corinthians 12:14), also emotional, spiritual NOTE: When he shows his love, she is willing to submit to him with love
Husbands and Wives (22-33) The two become one flesh (31) Genesis 2:24 The bond of a husband and wife should be closer than any other worldly relationship! This is the husband and wife working together to make a marriage work
Husbands and Wives (22-33) Nevertheless, let each of you (33) Summary, the husband should love his own wife She is to respect (fear, reverence) her husband NOTE the exclusivity of this relationship
Christ and His church (22-33) As we consider this section, keep in mind the relationship of a husband and wife as God intended it to be.
Christ and His church (22-33) Christ is the head of the church (23) Established early in this epistle (1:22-23) As head, He is ruler and has authority to determine what and how we do what we do.
Christ and His church (22-33) He is the Savior of the body (23) Savior a deliverer, one who rescues another 1 Timothy 4:10, Titus 1:4, 2 Peter 3:18, cf. Eph. 5:25- 27
Christ and His church (22-33) The church is subject to Him (24) As a wife is to be subject to her husband Will we submit to His will in ALL things? cf. Luke 6:46 How we behave toward one another as brethren indicates this subjection
Christ and His church (22-33) Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her (25-27) His headship is not one of ego or brutality. It was love to the point of sacrifice Romans 5:8-9, Galatians 2:20 Acts 20:28, He purchased the church with His own blood
Christ and His church (22-33) That He might sanctify and cleanse her (25-27) Sanctify to set apart, make holy. We are special to Him! Do we set ourselves apart for Him? church with His own blood Cleanse to wash, make clean. He has done what He can to make us special, to proudly present us as His
Christ and His church (22-33) That He might present her to Himself a glorious church (25-27) Glorious with great beauty, splendor. Not having spot or wrinkle His bride is without defect before Him! We are holy and without blemish perfect! What are we doing to keep ourselves that way?
Christ and His church (22-33) We are members of His body (30) Are we? Acts 2:47, 1 Corinthians 12:13 Galatians 3:27-28 Again, in context, a reminder to act like a loving, subjecting wife that belongs to Him
Christ and His church (22-33) This is a great mystery (32) Something previously hidden, but now revealed. Paul is primarily addressing the church. He has concerns!
ARE WE BRINGING GLORY TO HIS BODY?
