  1. Dr Swaroopa Patil

  2. What is a symptom? Symptom is an evidence of disease or change from state of health. In Aph 6, Hahnemann defines symptom as deviations from the former healthy state of the now diseased individual, which are felt by the patient himself, remarked by those around him and observed by the physician .

  3. What is totality of symptoms? In aph 7, Hahnemann defines it as the outwardly reflected picture of the internal essence of the disease, that is, of the affection of the vital force. It is the true and only conceivable portrait of the disease.

  4. What is the Importance of totality of symptoms? It is the sole means through which the disease makes known what remedy it requires. Thus it is the true and only basis for every homoeopathic prescription. Removal of totality of symptoms is restoring the patient back to health.

  5. What is totality of each individual symptom? It is a complete symptom having -Location -Sensation -Modality A single symptom is more than a single fact, with its history, its origin, location, its progress or direction and its conditions.

  6. Totality of symptoms means all the symptoms of the case which are capable of being logically combined into a harmonious and consistent whole, having form, coherency and individuality. It includes concomitance or form in which symptoms are grouped. This is the logical totality.

  7. Numerical totality is merely the numerical aggregate of symptoms- the entire number of symptoms as particulars or single symptoms without any form or individuality. Prescribing on basis of numerical totality ( mechanical symptom covering)is a fundamental error.

  8. Diagnostic totality: Those symptoms which have a known pathological relation to each other and help in diagnosis of the disease. Therapeutic totality: Those peculiar and characteristic symptoms which help in the selection of similimum.

  9. The elements which make up the therapeutic totality must be as definitely and logically related and consistent as are the elements which make up the diagnostic totality. Thus the totality of symptoms is not a mere haphazard jumble of symptoms thrown together without reason.

  10. As a perfect working machine is more than a numerical aggregate of its single dissociated parts, so also the totality is more than the mere aggregate of its constituent symptoms. It is the aggregate of symptoms in such a way so as to bring out the individuality of the case- form a picture of the disease to be matched with that in our Materia Medica.
