DEFINITION OF TOURNAMENT A series of games or contests that make up a single unit of competition (as on a professional golf tour), the championship playoffs of a league or conference, or an invitational event A knightly sport of the Middle Ages between mounted combatants armed with blunted lances or swords and divided into two parties contesting for a prize or favor bestowed by the lady of the tournament The whole series of knightly sports, jousts, and tilts occurring at one time and place
TYPES OF TOURNAMENTS There are many method of conducting tournament. It depends on the following reasons: Number of participating teams Nature of activity Available number of grounds / courts Number of days to finish the tournament Number of officials available Financial condition of the organizers Total time to conduct one match
The various type of tournaments are detailed as under: A Knock-out Tournament This type of tournament is also known as elimination tournament. In this type of tournament losers are eliminated in successive rounds and winner continue to play till the winner is decided. Advantages of Knock-out Tournament The expenditure of organizing knock-out tournament is less and number of matches is less. Fewer days are needed to complete the tournament. Less number of officials are needed. The fear of elimination tends the player to exhibit their best. The knock-out tournament is more challenging because once a team loses is out of the tournament. Disadvantages of Knock-out Tournament Some times better teams are eliminated in the first round.In case of inclement climate or poor playing conditions the better team may not qualify for the next round.
League or Round Robin Tournament The league tournament is also known as Round Robin tournament. In this type of tournament all teams play each other team irrespective of winning or losing. Advantages of League Tournament Since there is no early elimination, the better team reach to win. Every team get sufficient time to exhibit its performance. These tournaments take long time and lot of matches are played and spectators can enjoy more. Selectors get better opportunity to watch the performance of each player as the teams play equal number of matches. In case of any untoward incident if the match has to abandon, both the team are given one score each. Disadvantages of League Tournament League tournament require more time. Since the number of matches is more, the cost also increases. More officials are required. More ground / courts are needed.
Combination Tournament The league and knockout tournaments can be joined to have combination tournament which can be done by the following methods: League cum knock-out In this type of tournament, all the team play League tournament and the best four or eight teams are given knock-out fixture and the winner is decided. Knock-out cum League After conducting knock-out tournament up to quarter finals, the rest of the team play league matches to decide the winner. When tournament is played in different zones and at different locations then the following type of combination tournament are conducted. Knock-out cum Knock-out In case of knock-out matches played in four zones (may be more zones) and are held at different locations, the best two teams of each zone are selected to play again a knock-out tournament to decide the winners. League cum League In case of league matches played in four zones (may be more zones) and are held at different locations, the best two teams of each zone are selected to play again a league tournament to decide the winner.
