Last week - What happens to a person when they die?
Luke 16:19-22 There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table.
Luke 16:19-22 Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s side.
Luke 16:23-24 The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his
Luke 16:23-24 finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.
Ecc. 3:11 God has planted eternity in the hearts of mankind
Matthew 5:21-22 You have heard
Matthew 5:21-22 You have heard You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder and whoever murders will be liable to judgement.
Matthew 5:22 But I say to you, oh uh, that everyone who is angry with his brother is liable to judgement .
Matthew 5:22 But I say to you, oh uh, that everyone who is angry with his brother is liable to judgement . if you say you fool
Matthew 5:22 But I say to you, oh uh, that everyone who is angry with his brother is liable to judgement . if you say you fool [Raca which means worthless ] will be liable to the hell of fire.
Matthew 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
Jesus believed in a very real hell. He taught that it was outer place, of darkness (literally without light or the light of God), fire, gnashing or grinding of teeth, (Matt 7:6, 13-14, 21-23, 27, 8:11-12, 10:28, 22:1-14, 25:41, Mk 9:43-48, Luke 5:6, 6:49)
Gehenna was the Greek translation for a Hebrew expression Valley of Hinnom.
Universalism is the opinion that everyone makes it to heaven.
Everyone who does not have a relationship with Jesus
What about the babies and children who died before they made a choice to follow Jesus? Or the mentally handicap who can t make a choice? Are they sent to hell?
2 Sam 12:22-23 He said, While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, Who knows whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.
What about the person who has never heard about Jesus?
Luke 12:48 to whom much is given, much is required.
But I do believe that our understanding of Hell impacts our view of God, it impacts how we handle scripture, and it should impact our desire to share what we know and have experienced with others (evangelism).
