  1. Wounds and Bleeding Al-Mustaqbal University College Department of Radiology Technologies By : Prof. Dr. Fadhil Sahib .

  2. Definition Definition of Bleeding: Loss of a large amount of blood from blood vessels outside the body.

  3. Causes of Bleeding: Trauma such as injuries that affect coagulation. Rupture of a blood vessel due to diseases like tuberculosis, ulcers. During or after surgical operations. Penetrating injuries.

  4. Complications of Bleeding: 1. Loss of blood. 2. Shock. 3. Pain. 4. Infection by microbes.

  5. Importance of preventing these complications: Loss of large amount of blood + Shock + Infection = Death

  6. Types of Bleeding: External bleeding. Internal bleeding. Bleeding from one of the body's openings.

  7. External Bleeding: Loss of blood through the skin injury. Definition of wound : Tear in body tissues .

  8. Types of Wounds: Closed wounds: skin remains intact but internal tissues may be injured. Open wounds: skin is cut and bleeding is visible.

  9. Closed Wounds: Usually caused by blunt force. Skin appears normal but underlying tissue may have damage, swelling, bruising, and pain.

  11. First Aid for Closed Wounds: Elevate the affected limb. Apply cold compress or ice. Check for fractures or internal injuries. Refer to a doctor immediately if suspected.

  12. Types and Causes of Open Wounds: Abrasions: Superficial wounds like scratches. Usually minor bleeding but risk of infection.

  13. First Aid for Minor Open Wounds: Wash wound with water and soap. Apply antiseptic like Betadine. Cover with sterile gauze if necessary. Make sure bleeding has stopped.

  14. Incised Wounds: Clean cut through tissues, often caused by sharp objects like glass or knives.

  15. How to Stop Bleeding:

  16. Important Notes: Always make sure to apply pressure bandage. Keep hands and feet warm and mobile. If extremities are cold and pale, loosen the bandage and transfer the patient to hospital immediately.

  17. Avulsion Wounds: Tearing away of part of the body like finger or ear. Usually due to accidents, bites, or explosives.

  18. First Aid for Avulsion: Place the avulsed part in a clean plastic bag. Put the bag in another bag filled with ice water. Transport immediately to a large hospital for possible reattachment.

  19. Puncture Wounds: Caused by sharp objects like nails or shrapnel. May appear small externally but deep inside. Risk of infection is high and bleeding might be internal.

  21. First Aid for Puncture Wounds: Stabilize any embedded object to prevent further injury. Prevent air from entering, contamination, bleeding, and tissue damage.
