What is a Digital Footprint? ACTIVE An active digital footprint is information that users share while knowing that info is public-accessible. This makes it easy to decide what they want to reveal to other users. PASSIVE A passive digital footprint is information that a user leaks which is publicly available without the user's knowledge. This type of footprint is much more dangerous and harder to keep appropriate.
My Footprint Despite the numerous search results, there wasn't anything about me. One result showed a Facebook account with my first and last name on it and some others showed 3 profiles with names like mine. The lack of info probably reflects the fact I don t share anything about myself on any social media platforms. My Name Is...
How Might My Digital Footprint Affect Me? My online presence doesn't seem to be strong enough to make a mark in my future yet. Although my digital footprint accumulates more data each year, I don't share much about myself online. This makes my footprint less revealing about myself. As a result, if someone was to search my name online, it would be very difficult to find anything about me. If something private gets out, it will likely affect how others see me as a person/employee. Anything inappropriate I may have done could negatively affect my relationship with friends or future friends, and my chance of getting a job. 70% of employers look through a potential employee's digital footprint to see if they have the qualities the employers are looking for(Fennel). There is a good chance I am one of those potential employees, and if I mess up online, it could ruin my future. PAST FUTURE Digital footprints don't always show the negative version of anyone. Say I did something impressive and it gets shared online. This could boost my reputation and could interest employers in me. I could unintentionally just have bettered my chances of getting a job or making new friends.
What Information have I Unintentionally leaked, and Where Could it be Going? On YouTube, I watch videos I like. Bots then see what I watch and send me recommendations and ads based on that. Your search history isn't private. The Wi-Fi owner can see your search history even if you deleted it, which can be quite embarrassing if you've ever searched up anything inappropriate. (BroadLinc) If you ever expose your email address or phone number, it's usually sold to other companies so they can spam you with ads. While my email is clean of spam, my phone has gotten a few spam calls. I use public Wi-Fi a lot on my phone. I haven't done anything important on my phone online, but unimportant information is still information. This data could possibly be sold to companies to send me ads.
How do You Keep Your Digital Footprint Appropriate? DONT Don't reveal too much. The purpose of social media is to get others to share news and gossip. It's very easy to leak something about yourself, intentionally or not. This data can quickly be acquired and cause lots of problems for you. DO Adjust the settings on all apps you have. There are many settings you can turn on and off to protect yourself, such as the ones that allow an app to access your camera see your photos. It's best to limit the access apps have to your computer or data. Update your software. Software updates have bug fixes and extra virus/hacker protection that reduce the chance of your personal information getting stolen. Don't get tempted by online quizzes. Most of the time it's just an easy way to get info on your likes and dislikes. Various businesses use your data to send certain ads that you may be interested in and analyze what you want, all for their profit. (Miller)
What is Digital Permanence? Even when data is deleted, it could still remain somewhere. It is almost impossible to remove this information. We call this Digital Permeance(Wikipedia). Because of Digital Permeance, it is possible to recover nearly anything, ever supposedly wiped files. This means that data can be found from hard drives thrown away in junkyards. Digital Permeance makes it hard to get rid of anything you post online, anything inappropriate or embarrassing that you think you have deleted could still be out there, waiting to be discovered. Digital Permeance will likely affect your future job prospects and how others see you online. If something you don't want to be seen gets found out and shared, it could seriously damage your reputation. To avoid being in scenarios where your future is at risk, share only what you want to be seen. Source: Unknown Author/Website
