Song:Alexander Hamilton Artist(of the song): Lin Manuel Miranda Theme:Resilience The reason I chose this song is that it talks of a man, who came from poor beginnings, who grows up to be a founding father. Now while Trevor Noah certainly didn t become nearly as influential as a founding father, I would say it fits him. The similarities lie within both having adversity in their lives and both finding the strength breaking out of that cycle to become something better. Song Lyrics: Song Lyrics: How does a bastard orphan son of a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar Quote: I remember the thing that caused the trauma but I don t hold onto the trauma. I never let the memory of something painful prevent me from trying something new.
Song:Breaking the Law Artist:Judas Priest Theme:Racismand Apartheid I chose Breaking the Law as a song to represent one of the themes in the novel. The theme was Racism and how systemic racism affected Trevor. Trevor had to, in multiple different scenarios, either break the law or skirt it. His first career was selling pirated CDs. Because he was born a crime and was of African decent he was not given the same rights and opportunities of lighter skin tones. It is a fitting song because it states that the person breaking the law doesn t want to do it but has to. Song Quote Song Quote You don t know what its like, you don t have a clue, if you did you d find yourselves doing the same thing too. Book quote Book quote The hood made me realize, that crime succeeds because crime does the one thing the government doesn t do: crime cares
Song:The Town Inside Me Artist:Daisuke Ishiwatari Theme:Identity I chose this song because, while it is technically about a different type of identity struggle than what Trevor experiences in Born a Crime, it is still what the song is about. Trevor, in many different environments, has to choose between the coloured kids, who he looked like, or the black kids who he acted like and synergised with. He felt torn as to who he fit in with best at a time when people were segregated by colour. It was an internal struggle to find where he belonged. Song Lyric: T Song Lyric: The town inside me, and everyone s voice, only I m not there, just watching from afar. Book Quote Book Quote: Being a man is not what you have its who you are.
Song:Never GonnaGive You Up Artist:Rick Astley Theme: Family I chose this song because it represents the theme of family as it signifies the love that is shared between Trevor and his mom. It helps to represent how throughout all of their struggles they will never give up on each other. Because of Apartheid in South Africa, his dad had to stay distant, so for most of the time it was just him and his mom, and so they grew extremely close. Even though his mom used violence at times, it was from a place of love and trying to protect and teach him. Song Lyrics Song Lyrics: Never gonnagive you up, never gonnalet you down, never gonnarun around, and hurt you Book quote Book quote: Everything I have ever done, I have done from a place of love, if I don t punish you, the world will punish you worse, the world doesn t love you, when I beat you, I m trying to save you, when the police beat you, they re trying to kill you.
