  1. United States Naval Academy BGO Options for Reserve Officers CDR Sarah McGann, USN USNA Reserve Component Outreach Officer (RCO) CAPT Jill Richards, USN Area Coordinator Oregon 414 USNAINST CZAR *RCO Contact Information available in BGIS

  2. United States Naval Academy 1st Page Gouge Sheet Most reservists fall into the below categories. Both MUST verify their own points are credited (i.e. keep copies of everything!): See BGIS Reserve NAIP Step by Step instructions - https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/BGIS/reserve-naip.php If Drilling Reservist: 1) Appropriate Orders issued by NAIP Reserve Officer / BGO Liaison Officer, 2) Points sheet signed off and submitted to Pay Authority at the NRC (these are non-pay Additional Training Points (ATPs)) they are now completed via Enhanced Drill Management System (EDM) as a non-pay ATP. SELRES Drill once a month and doing Active Duty for 12-14 days per year Voluntary Training Unit (VTU) Drill once a month, but do not have a unit to support so more flexible for rescheduling drills to perform ATPs as a BGO If non-Drilling Reservist (and can make it to O-4 and 16 years before 20 years from commission date, since may not be promotable): 1) Get Appropriate Orders issued, 2) Get Points sheet signed off by Area Coordinator and mail into Pers-93 (ONLY IF YOU WERE IN IRR PRIOR TO 29 NOV 2017 AND APPROVED FOR POINTS PRIOR TO THAT)

  3. United States Naval Academy 2nd Page Gouge Sheet A satisfactory (SAT) year that counts towards a 20 year retirement is 50 points. (fyi reservists do not get paid until age 60, based on a formula based on points earned and final rank) (minus time for Mobilizations after JAN 2008) 15 points are gratuitous, leaving 35 points (3 hours a period or point) needed to get a SAT year. If drilling, this is typically not an issue, however, if in the VTU (Voluntary Training Unit) or IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) then all of the points need to come from the NAIP (BGO) Program or additionally from correspondence courses that have points associated with them. The Points MUST be earned during the reservists Points Year . This is not based on calendar/fiscal year, and is different for every reservist! It depends on when the reservist joined the military or entered the reserves. Can be checked by Bupers Online with a CAC card at https://www.bol.navy.mil and then ARPR and ASOSH. (or call PERS-93 if no CAC Card) If at least 35 (+15) points are NOT gained during that 12 month timeframe, then a SAT year towards retirement is NOT credited, and it is called an UNSAT year.

  4. United States Naval Academy 3rd Page Gouge Sheet Examples (as of SEP 2018) You have a 2009 year group BGO candidate who got off active duty in 2016, and they want to know if they can join the program to get points. They would have come out as a LT, so they must be able to be promoted to O-4 to be able to continue to be able to earn points to get to 20 years. They have a 2+ year gap in service. 1. If they are Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) and Active Status Pool (ASP) Status 1 (S1) then will need to move to SELRES or VTU status. If Status 2 (S2) then they will need to be brought back to Status 1 to be able to earn points. 2. If they are a drilling reservist, then they can earn points on top of their drills. 3. If they are a 2006 year group and it has been 5+ years since they came off active duty, and they did not drill as a reservist then they MUST make O-5 to be able to get retire properly (since they would only have 15 years of service by 2026 and could not retire as an O-4) Unless they went SELRES and were promoted to O-5 (active reserves) they would NOT be able to get to a retirement. 4. If in doubt (or you want to find Reserve officers that may be idle in a nearby VTU please contact the RCO listed in BGIS.

  5. United States Naval Academy NAIP Reserve Officer Benefits Retirement Points (SELRES, VTU or *grandfathered IRR) Recruiting Ribbon Eligible for No-cost Annual Training (AT) for summer training (part of your normal AT as long as your CO approves it) Productive alternative to the Voluntary Training Unit (VTU)
