United Way for City of Kawartha Lakes - Building Community and Support
United Way for City of Kawartha Lakes focuses on supporting agencies and programming in the community to meet basic needs, help children and youth succeed, and create vibrant neighborhoods. The organization's initiatives, such as Edwin Binney's Community Garden, aim to provide fresh produce to those in need, especially during the pandemic. UNITED WAY FOR THE CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES Giving is Believing 2021-2022 CAMPAIGN Building Community in City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County
Your United Way United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes supports agencies and programming in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. All funds raised stay local. Therefore, funds raised in City of Kawartha Lakes stay in CKL and funds raised in Haliburton County stay in Haliburton County. None of this is possible without the support of our valued donors. UWCKL needs your support more than ever as we continue to work with our partners to help the community remain resilient during the pandemic and build towards a stronger future. The following pages provide more information about our work, our response to the ongoing pandemic, what will be needed going forward and how you can help.
The Three Pillars United Way s work focuses on three key strategies that create opportunities for everyone in our communities to live a better life. From Poverty to Possibility: Helping to meet the basic needs of our community s most vulnerable people, giving every Canadian the opportunity to realize a better future. All That Kids Can Be Giving children and youth the support they need to get a great start in life, do well in school, and reach their full potential. Healthy People, Strong Communities Creating vibrant neighbourhoods, where everyone experiences a sense of belonging and connection to one another.
Edwin Binney's Community Garden The second year of Edwin Binney's Community Garden was a big success, with just over 12,700 pounds of produce donated. Growing space was expanded for Year 2, and this increase in production was even more important due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fleming College's Sustainable Agriculture program conducted part of their Farm Camp at Edwin Binney s Community Garden in early November. As part of farm camp students erected a hoop house which has allowed us to extend our growing season. They also helped to plant fruit trees, the majority of which were purchased through a grant from Tree Canada. We continued to provide produce to the organizations who received donations in 2019, while adding new projects in response to the pandemic. These new projects helped get food to individuals who may not qualify for government aid, were isolated, or simply could not afford fresh fruits and vegetables. In collaboration with Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes we delivered a monthly produce bag to clients in need. The program, called Garden at Your Table, filled in the gaps for individuals who relied on the Good Food Box, which was suspended due to COVID-19. We also had Fresh Produce Fridays and brought fresh food to three social housing units. A third project was a collaboration with Haliburton Highlands Health Services called Haliburton Foodlove, with produce delivered directly to the homes of clients. These projects continue to run in 2021.
On-site education programming is back at the garden! We're excited to offer opportunities for safe and enriching workshops for all ages at Edwin Binney's Community Garden.

Many of these challenges were exacerbated by the pandemic, and local agencies continue to dedicate themselves to responding to the immediate, emerging and long-term needs of the community.
