  1. An Introduction to Our Values

  2. Agenda Why have values? The story so far and where we are headed More than just words on a page Find out more and next steps

  3. Our values

  4. Why have values? To build a supportive, inclusive and vibrant community Having values that unite us will help us to attract and retain the most talented and diverse people. To harness our collective strength Values help to us to be clearly set out what we can expect of each other to work effectively in partnership and create meaningful impact. To create a culture where we all feel valued and respected Values will help to empower us, to voice our differing perspectives and realise our full potential, no matter our role or field. To help us make better decisions Values can be used as a lens to guide our decisions and actions To help us achieve our ambitions Values will help us to create a culture where we recognise that success comes not just from what we do, but also how we do it.

  5. Why now? The University strategy is much more expansive in the areas we need to deliver e.g. research. Our external environment is changing, international recruitment is extremely competitive. We will need to operate and approach our work with absolute clarity, not just about what we do, but how we work together The values help to spell this out, they give us a guide about how to approach our work and get the best out of each other and ourselves.

  6. The story so far

  7. How we chose these values and why The story starts in March 2021 with design of our new University strategy. Working Together both internally and with our partners was key to making this strategy a reality. To enable and emphasise this, we wanted to develop a set of values. We worked with colleagues from across the University to identify what values were most important to us at the time and what values would enable success in the future. This led us to a combination of values that characterised how we already worked together and values we would need to adopt to enable our future success.

  8. Our Strategy is launched In March 2022 University Council approved a new ambitious strategy Creating Better Futures.Together Six enabling projects were initiated to support delivery of our strategy, one of these was Project Expectations Project Expectations is about making sure that we all feel informed, engaged and valued for the contribution we make to our success. It signalled the start of a journey to shape and build a culture of feedback, support and development to create a place where we work together to achieve great things. In January 2024 the Project Expectations Board tasked the project team with developing a set of behaviours aligned to our values that would help translate what these really mean in action.

  9. Values in action A team of facilitators developed and delivered Values Cafes to draw out and listen to views from across the University about what behaviours support our values in action. They listened to the thoughts and ideas of over 400 members of staff. They also gathered insight on what people said about our culture . Community and a sense of belonging matter There are barriers to being adventurous Role modelling is influential Decision making that is collaborative and transparent is important We don t always do a great job of addressing poor behaviours People feel proud to work here and of what we do

  10. Our values and behaviours The input was collated, and a draft set of behaviours were developed. These were shared with groups across the University, including UEB, staff networks, trade unions and EDI team to check and challenge them. In October 2024 we agreed on the set of behaviours that supported our values. We also agreed to review these regularly, listen to our community and change where needed. To support our values and behaviours, our leaders developed and committed to a set of aligned leadership principles

  11. Whats next

  12. More than just words on a page We want our values to be more than just words on a page, but we can only achieve this by everyone embracing them every day. Embedding them into our daily interactions and decisions will enable us to create a supportive, vibrant and inclusive community where we can all thrive. We ll be embedding our values as part of our employee lifecycle, they are already part of induction in Welcome to Loughborough and we recognise and celebrate them in action through the VC Awards.

  13. Were working towards being values-driven We are proud of the progress we've made, but we recognise that embedding our values into every aspect of our university is an ongoing journey. Together, we are committed to this shared mission, supporting one another as we build culture where each of us can thrive. Together, let's embrace this change and continue to work together to make Loughborough University a beacon of excellence, inclusivity, and collaboration.
