ZECHARIAH 4:1-6 Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep. 2He asked me, What do you see? I answered, I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left. 4I asked the angel who talked with me, What are these, my lord? 3Also there are two olive trees by 5He answered, Do you not know what these are? ZECHARIAH 4:7-10 7 What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of God bless it! ZECHARIAH 4:11-14 11Then I asked the angel, What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand? 12Again I asked him, What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil? 13He replied, Do you not know what these are? No, my lord, I said. 14So he said, These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES 1 This is a strange vision: both biblical exegesis and then prophetic interpretation the second needs as much weighing up as the first. But, I believe that the Spirit has given me the second as much as the first, and that this relates to TCF for the coming years. Symbolism is an integral part of OT prophecy, as much as NT prophecy. Just about every number in Revelation is symbolic rather than literal. Revelation draws upon Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Genesis, and Zechariah in particular all highly symbolic. E.g. Oil = The Holy Spirit
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES 2 What does Zechariah have to do with us on the church today? 1 Corinthians 10:11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. But we have to be careful: most NT church prophecy was not written down subsequently in scripture;. What did Agabus say? What about Barnabus? Philip s for unmarried daughters who were prophetesses? The prophets in Antioch? They were prophecies for a time and a place and a particular people of God. Absolutely vital for the intended recipient, but not that relevant for any other believer
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES 3 God has said many things to us as TCF over the past two years, through prophecy. There is also the witness of scripture. Any further interpretation must be consistent with year two particularly scripture! So how do I interpret Zechariah chapter 4? Bear in mind that it is all focussed on the restoration of God s temple Consider also the way that one scripture explains another
REVELATION 11:1, 3-6 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth. olive trees and the two lampstands, and they stand before the Lord of the earth. tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die. 6They have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want. 3And I will appoint my 4They are the two 5If anyone
THE TEMPLE AND THE WITNESSES Every matter must be established by the testimony of two (or more) witnesses (Matthew 18:16; 2 Corinthians 13:1; these both quote Deuteronomy 19:15). The gospel needs effective human witness to establish it and the Church is the institution on earth that God has established to do this. Therefore, many commentators propose that these Two Witnesses symbolise the true church on earth. Symbolically they are also the Olive Trees and Lampstands of Zechariah 4, which again symbolise God s people. Jesus sent his apostles two by two to preach the gospel (Luke 10:1) as witnesses to the Kingdom.
No, my lord, I replied. 6So he said to me, This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD Almighty.
ZECHARIAH 4:7-10 7 What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of God bless it! God bless it! 8Then the word of the LORD came to me:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. 10 Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?
ZECHARIAH 4:11-14 11Then I asked the angel, What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand? 12Again I asked him, What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil? 13He replied, Do you not know what these are? No, my lord, I said. 14So he said, These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.
PRAY OURSELVES AS TCF For complete dependence upon the Holy Spirit for revelation and power For daily replenishment of our reserves of oil a sustainable source For TCF / God s local churches to be that source of power and prophecy, to fuel the light of the gospel to the world Not to despise the day of small things but to see a proper foundation built For our passion to be for the Bride!
