Knowledge is Power Maths Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Mathematics reveals its secrets only to those who approach it with pure love, for its own beauty. Archimedes The highest form of pure thought is in mathematics. Knowledge is Power Maths Intent Pupils will: Key concepts: Number Pattern Shape Space Measure Geometry Statistics Algebra Reasoning become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions These key concepts are revisited within and across year groups so that children become fluent and master the curriculum. Knowledge is Power Maths coverage At Bradley Green we have created our own coverage maps using the White Rose overviews. We removed some of the objectives that could be covered in other areas of the curriculum to allow more time in the maths curriculum to work on number and calculations we believe that children need to develop a secure sense of number. Knowledge is Power Mathematical fluency We believe that Knowledge is Power and so in addition to the daily maths lesson, children will have additional maths opportunities to practise known/basic skills. (This may take place in a morning or an afternoon but should last approximately 20 minutes.) We have created a maths overview for each year group that contains specific skills to be recapped each half term, which revisit a variety of skills including those taught in previous units as well as in previous year groups. Knowledge is Power Task design Pupils will be working on the same task but may need additional support, apparatus or scaffolds to help them to achieve success. Teachers should carefully select questions to facilitate depth of thinking and challenge. Tasks should be derived from a range of sources White Rose, Convince me cards, Classroom Secrets, Testbase, Open-middle (website), Isee Maths, NRICH and NCETM. Ensure children do not have too many representations at any one time. Respect Challenge Confident Curiosity Ambition for Excellence!
Knowledge is Power Working walls Across the school, Maths working walls will have a blue theme. They will have a blue border and blue lettering. It is to have two sections one that relates to the current teaching and the other part will relate to key knowledge/info relating to the year group. It may be that other areas of the classroom are utilised to display maths related items. Current teaching Wall Vocabulary heading (Blue) Maths lessons must develop the use of precise mathematical vocabulary, vocabulary must be displayed on the maths working wall by constantly referring to it can really help children to both remember and use it. Examples Pictorial examples must be visible on working walls this can be images snipped from slides/teaching materials or from text books such as maths no problem. Abstract methods should be visible where relevant this may have a step by step success for methods eg: addition etc. Stem sentences these sentence structures often express key conceptual ideas or generalities and provide a framework to embed conceptual knowledge and build understanding. The NCETM Spine materials are rich in examples of these. Reasoning stems Working walls should display sentence starters to assist children with responses to reasoning questions. Some examples are below but can be adapted for year groups. Respect Challenge Confident Curiosity Ambition for Excellence!
Knowledge is Power Working walls A document has been put together for each year group which specifies what things need to be on the fixed wall. Respect Challenge Confident Curiosity Ambition for Excellence!
