  3. Film Introduction Film Introduction This film screening is hosted by the Human Rights Watch Student Task Force (STF). They are a human rights club that meets on ________ in room _______ at lunch. This spring they re protecting the rights of asylum seekers by advocating against deadly deterrence policies. Deadly deterrence policies try to stop people from migrating to the United States by making it more difficult for them to do so. This film shows the unexpected, deadly fallout of such policies.

  4. Film Introduction Film Introduction After watching this 30-minute film, we will have a short discussion. Then you ll have the opportunity to take action by signing a petition. Please note that this film has some disturbing images. While this film was made in 2014, the number of migrant deaths in Brooks County, Texas (and nearby counties) have only gone up each year.

  6. Film Discussion: Film Discussion: How did you feel after watching The Real Death Valley ? Did the film affect the way you think about immigration? Why or why not? Policies that make it difficult for people to seek asylum in the US are intended to deter migrants from trying to enter (also known as deterrence policies). Looking at Fernando s situation as an example, how do these policies impact migration?

  7. Film Discussion: Film Discussion: What did you hear people say in the film about why they came to the United States? What did the journalists learn when they took the trip for themselves around the checkpoint? How did it make you feel to know that Fernando and so many other migrants die or face dehydration on their journey around the Brooks County checkpoint?

  8. Petition: Petition: The Student Task Force is petitioning our Congressmembers to put a stop to deadly deterrence policies and to honor the human and civil rights of asylum seekers. I m going to pass around the petition and invite you to sign if you d like to. Later this semester, Student Task Force members will deliver this petition in person to our Congressional Representative.

  10. Optional Extension Activities Optional Extension Activities Writing prompts: The film ends with this statement: "Regardless of how we feel about illegal immigration, is this the best we can do?" Using 3 examples from the film, explain what this means to you. Rewrite the story of Fernando and his brother to have a happy ending. What policies and practices in Brooks County and the US immigration system would need to change for this ending to become a reality? Using 3 examples from the film, counter the statement: If the US government makes stricter policies and adds more checkpoints, people will not attempt to cross the southern border.
