  2. Data journalism is the ability to analyze and examine numbers and to know how to manage large datasets and read them correctly.

  3. Using data, the job of journalists shifts its main focus from being the first ones to report to being the ones telling us what a certain development might actually mean.

  4. Data journalism begins by asking questions of numbers. It is using numbers to verify or disclaim a statement.

  5. Biggest data journalism challenge How and where do I get the data?

  6. There are a number of ways to get data for your story.

  7. 1. A source comes to you and tells you about it. Maybe a whistleblower!!!

  8. 2. You are researching a story and realize that data has been collected. The data might be privately held or require owner s permission before re-use.

  9. 3. Regulator/Government Agency or Department. If an organization investigates or regulates anything, it will hold data to measure the performance of whatever it is regulating.

  10. 4. Every public body will have some sort of reporting requirements find out what they are.

  11. 5. Government statistics that, when combined with other statistics produce a new picture.

  12. 6. Information that is not in the format of statistics but you can pull statistics out of it

  14. Now that we have data, what are we gonna do

  16. Data-based stories can earn you a front page, but get it wrong and force your company to print a front page retraction and you may well find yourself looking for a new job.
