Connecting climate-vulnerable farming communities in Pakistan to improved climate-smart irrigation practices using citizen science. The project aims to enhance climate information and analytics in 10 districts across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Punjab. Through a grant of $250,000, the project will leverage existing resources and collaborations to upgrade the ICAS services, engage citizen scientists, and promote the use of innovative technologies. The implementation approach involves selecting farmers, partnering with government stakeholders, upgrading mobile applications, training citizen scientists, and developing governance plans for scaling up the initiative over a 14-month period.

  2. Project Overview Project overall Goal: Connecting climate vulnerable farming communities to improved climate smart irrigation practices through citizen science Thematic Area: Climate information and analytics Geographic Scope: Pakistan (10 districts) Balochistan: Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Peshawar, Sindh: Sanghar, Tandojam, Mipurkhas, Punjab: Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar and Toba Tek Singh All these sites are selected as they either represent; communities with higher water use, food baskets and higher level of community mobilization for innovative initiatives. Grant Amount (in US$) : 250,000 The ICAS services are now supported by a strong server system for running analytics on daily basis through an additional funding of Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Pakistan.

  6. Project Sustainability Sr# Challenge Solution Status Acceptance of innovation and its access to citizens (farmers) Innovation is simple which is acceptable and understood by the user Innovation should be time tested by the users during the climate crises. Enabling users to be Champions Communicating with the relevant government agencies and taking them on-board Involving youth and sensitize the men so that they may create space for the women of their families Enhanced transparency of citizen generated climate data fulfilling quality controls of the government agencies Citizen science data will ensure the sustainability of innovation if launched through ownership 1 Resolved 2 Scalability of the innovation Resolved Innovation to be used by other government agencies and users in longer term Partially resolved 3 4 Gender mainstreaming Resolved Increased number of volunteer citizen scientists for making this database attractive for government agencies 5 To be resolved 6 Sustainability of the ICAS To be resolved

  7. Project Sustainability Initial phase; consultation for monetization to self-sustain the system Development phase; Data management techniques to enhance ownership Final phase; A governance plan for innovation Acceptability among communities and time tested during 2022 floods Resolved Consultations remained continued. More communication issues will be resolved during this phase. Partially Resolved To be resolved Activities in this project phase and the governance plan
