Changes Replaces API Number with a US Well Number Why? Wells and multiple wellbores. US Well Number is at least 12 digits, with an optional extension. All wellbores must be identified, including bypasses and deepenings. US Well Number Standard: 1. State Code (two digit position 1 2) 2. County Code (three digits positions 3 5) 3. Well Code (five digits positions 6 10) 4. Wellbore Code (two digits positions 11-12) 5. Extensions (any position beyond position 12)
Example Replaces API Number with a US Well Number North Carolina code is 32. All 50 states and DC included in alphabetic order. US Well Number is at least 12 digits, with an optional extension. Discussion This is an easy operation to undertake. Note that location of the well is not included in the US Well Number Standard. There is no need to renumber the oil and gas wells drilled in N.C. The cores, cuttings, and documentation for those wells are available. For new oil and gas wells, the US Well Number Standard will be used.
