"In his hands, I saw a golden spear, with an iron tip at the end that appeared to be on fire. He plunged it into my heart several times, all the way to my entrails. When he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out, as well, leaving me all on fire with love for God. The pain was so strong that it made me moan several times, and yet the sweetness of the pain was so surpassing that I couldn't possibly wish to be rid of it. My soul couldn't be content with anything but God. It wasn't a physical pain, but a spiritual one, even though my body did feel it considerably [ ] gave me a greater bliss than any created things could give me." 7 Thursday, 20 March 2025
What are some difficulties with visions? St Teresa of Avila 1515-1582 Based in what is now Spain Mystic Nun Unusually for the time as a woman wrote significantly about religious matters, gained lots of her credibility though being a nun, from a rich family and connected with St John the Divine https://youtu.be/pXAPzEYPIn4 Thursday, 20 March 2025 8
Teresas difficulties How can I trust that these visions are really from God and not a Demon trying to tempt me away from a true faith? Interestingly, this is what a lot of the critique at the time focused on, saying that her visions were demonic. Thursday, 20 March 2025 9
Teresas criteria of authenticity for intellectual visions 1. It is clear and distinct 2. Refers to things the person has not thought of or imagined before 3. Gives a level of understanding that is deep and hard to express in language 4. Leaves the person with a sense of peace and light rather than restlessness and doubt. Thursday, 20 March 2025 10

Thursday, 20 March 2025 12 Summary After each lesson rule off and put a summary box. Write the prompts (if there are any). Return to the summary box in your next study session (at least 1 hour after the lesson, but not more than 24 hours) to complete it, summarising what we learned in that lesson without reading through your notes. This will help you recall what you have learned which will make it stick better in your memory, and help you find relevant notes when writing homework essays/revising. What is a vision? Give an example of a biblical vision What does Teresa of Avila suggest about visions?
